T5 status

I have fairly critical of T5. I am a backer of the original T5 and T5.1, and I think we should all give Marc a pass on the plural of Appendix. I am a bit OCD and even I think that is a bit "nit-picky"....:)

I think your right.
(I'm just being a jerk now, lol)

I was hoping that we'd get the PDFs sooner from a previous quote, but I'll live.

Yes, it was. I've just written enough papers (yay liberal arts degree) that the particular spelling just jarred me the wrong way. Funny how some things just jump out to some people (I am totally oblivious to so many other things)

Still teetering, but who am I kidding: I'll be backing it in the end.

I'm still on the fence about TRAVELLER with two "L"s.

So, are all of the tables in one place? Or are they near the sections that use the tables?

I've see other books (maybe traveller) where the just cram all the tables in to one place, making folks flip back and forth from rules to tables.

I appreciate consolidation. Having the High Guard tables in the middle of the book wasn't really a problem (it's a small book), plus it was designed to be pulled out if players chose to do so.

But the idea of T5 having all of the tables in one place -- just sounds like it would need "Book 4, My God, it's full of tables."

But I can see having all of the combat tables at the end of Combat, Planet design tables at the end of that chapter, etc.

Which is, per the last draft I got (last week? two weeks ago at the longest...), how it's done. Chapter intro text, prose for table explication numbered to match table, then tables. repeat format.

teetered on in...while it still seems pretty high for 3 books which are a cleaned up version of something I already paid a fair chunk of change for (and will get the PDFs for for free), I am going to be optimistic and hope there is a playable system in there. Plus, Traveller has brought me a lot of joy over the years.

Now to see if he'll explain what the "Traveller5 Captain's 16-card Benefit Deck Supplement" is. Some of the rewards are somewhat nebulous to me despite the updates (kinda like T5 was to me!). I'll have to recheck the updates to see if I missed it.

Combat updates - Does anyone who's seen 5.1 know if it's still very much a 'shoot first, better have cover' sort of combat?

I'm kind of hoping so, I like that idea generally speaking, sort of like the BATTLETECH and Shadowrun Returns (PC games) style.

I'm looking at the Table of Contents and i see charts for In System Drives G, M, N, Z and T, O, but I see no R and H.

Have low tech Rockets and Heplar fallen out again? I'll be disappointed if they did.

Space Combat In Traveller5

Posted by Marc "Traveller" Miller (Creator)

Some things need to age for a while, and if they do they are better for it. I concede that one of the weak points in Traveller5 has been space combat. It is patterned on boardgame or miniatures combat and concerns itself with spaceships shooting at each other. We all know how that works, and its how things have been done for a long time.

Space combat in T5.10 is a new take on that concept, and I have three talking points about it.

* It is more role-playing oriented.▮

* It is fast-paced.

* It is Schroedingerian.

Role-Playing-Oriented.All of the players have something to do in space combat. A battle can be resolved without characters, and it defaults to some basic task values. But a player character can participate and (with appropriate skill) have an advantage in gunnery, or maneuvers, or defensive actions. Each player character has a role to play in the success of the action.

Fast-Paced.Small ship battles move quickly. A pirate raid, or a small naval battle can be resolved in under an hour, and often in much less than that. The Ship Cards record battle damage, and its easy to see what still works, and where the holes are in the ship.▮

It’s Schroedingerian.You know the quantum physics thought experiment: There’s a cat in a box along with a random thing that might kill the cat, or might not. You don’t know until you open the box. In Traveller Space Combat, the battle produces Hits and Penetrations and Damages, but they are recorded as OOA- Out-Of-Action. You don’t know how bad (or superficial) it was until after the battle. All you know during the battle is – It’s Out Of Action. During the battle, there are reports that the Drive Compartment is Hit (mark it OOA), or the Gunner is OOA. Maybe someone can respond with Damage Control to bring the Drives back on line, or First Aid to bring the Gunner back into action.

Only after the battle can anyone find out how bad the damage was, or whether the drives still work. I call that Schroedingerian.▮

There is also an interplay of potential weapons and defenses that my friend Rob Eaglestone calls RDME: a Rich Decision Making Environment. Defenses like the Grav Scrambler are able to fire in defense against Gravitic-based attacks (like Plasma Gun) and if it succeeds, stop the attack (and disable the attacking weapon). Laser turrets can be allocated to Anti-Missile defense (but if so, can’t be used in the Attack this combat round). Weapons can knock out sensors as well as other weapons. So: overall a Rich Decision Making Environment).

I am pleased with how Space Combat has come out, and I wanted to share that.

Part of it was inspired by a space battle scene I wrote in Agent of the Imperium. In part:

“Their burst of strange particles reached us just as we fired: carefully chosen to ignore most matter; carefully timed to degrade into energetic bursts once they had passed through our armor. They rocked our interior. I felt vibrations through my feet. Visuals and audibles across the bridge signaled damage. I heard a comment that our jump drives were shredded. If we didn’t win this battle, that would be the least of our worries.”

This space combat system is capable of generating battle scenes like that, and more.

Thank you all for your support.

Marc

We've all heard the stories of Wehrmacht troops pushing their plasma cannon laden tricycles through the French countryside towards the Atlantic, with their stores in horse drawn carts.

Those were moose-drawn tricycles. The troops were not pushing, they were steering.

Reban, they are still in there. They are mentioned but not covered in the main design sequence section on starship drives because they are not that common. However, they are listed in the design tables and fully covered in the "How Drives Work" section for those who want to include them.

Yesss. Thanks Major B. *Does Snoopy happy dance* I really think low tech options are important to have to have a complete sci-fi rpg.

Yay, new PDFs!

Will the PDF be updated somewhat frequently as errata is found and fixed?

I don't know how hard it is to update PDFs, but I know (on much smaller publications) I've seen DTRPG updated multiple times a day on one item ...

I wouldn't expect that from T5 because it's massive, but, monthly?

As far as experience so far ... pretty good. Ran into some issues, but mostly because I went right to career charts and didn't read the D Careers sections before jumping in.

Marc mentioned in his recent email (with the PDF download notification) that he will probably do a PDF update sometime around the end of August, around the time when the physical product ships.

Still not getting any of these purported emails despite signing up 8 times at this point. (And yes I've checked my spam folder.)

Why can't he just update the f'ing kickstarter page?!
