Oslo bombing

I was down town Oslo as the bomb(s) went off. I work just about a kilometer away. The whole building was shaking. As the weather was terrible and we expected thunder my first though was that the Lightning had hit the building. First 30-some minutes later when I checked the internet before I was going to go home I saw the truth about the sudden shaking.

None in my family or close friends has been affected. My sister works in the parlamental building, which is about 700 meters away. However, she has vacation.

To make matters worse a gun man has attacked a youth camp for the labour party wounding several kids. No concrete information has been released yet, but it is reported that several youth may also be killed.

This is indeed a black day in Norway =0(

Indeed.

According to NPR... It was a man in Police uniform who attacked the Youth Camp. He is strongly believed to have been the bomber, and was spotted at the scene of the bombing right after the explosion, then left and went to go kill some kids.

He's in custody, BTW.

So he attacked the government building to distract from his main target?

Some of the survivors have been suggesting there may have been more than one gunman, possilbly in error considering the confusion.

This sad story hasn't seen the end yet as it seems. More than 80 kids has been confirmed killed. They had few places to run as their summer camp was situated on a small island just a few hundred meters in diameter. many was shot as they tried to swim to safety. Searches are still going on after victims on the small island of Utøya.

This is maybe the worst massacre in modern history performed by a single person in just a few hours. The bomb down town Oslo pales to this with 7 dead and 9 seriously wounded and a unknown number of people with lesser wound. Hadn't it been for the vacation and at the time most people had left their offices this would have been far worse.

The scene down town Oslo was unreal yesterday. I have never seen as many armed police in the streets before. Most of the down town was closed off. To get home I had to walk around the city center to get transportation home as all public transportation was not allowed to cross the closed off area.

Today and the days ahead we will really learn the depths of this tragedy. I am still stunned and speechless. I am happy that far as I know, none in my family or close friends has been affected directly. But the size of the tragedy I will certainly know someone who has been affected.

I am grateful for the sympathy expressed on these boards.

Let me add my condolences and prayers to Norwegen people.

I was in Oslo on holydays several years ago, and I liked the city. I was shaken yeterday when I heard in the TV about the bombing.

Speaking as an Northern Irishman, accustomed to bombings and killings - I am shocked that such a horror has been unleashed upon Norway. May the dead rest in peace, the grieving relatives find some way to keep on going, and may whatever the maniac(s) wanted to achieve never come to pass.

My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Norway.

It almost seems like the bomb was a diversion to keep the police busy while the twisted, right-wing nut gunned down dozens of children in cold blood. Unspeakably vile.

The whole country only has a population of 5 million, so this will hit hard, but you're not alone; we're all with you.

Lykke til, Norge!

This is a soul-shattering event. My prayers and best wishes to all involved.

Andrew, I think the operative word is "nut", rather than any particular political posture the nut may have attached themselves to as an excuse for their actions. IMO, even considering this event in a political context is giving the evil-doer something they want. This would be an act of barbarism even between combatants at war.

What a horrible tragedy. May all stand together and be stronger for the sake of the lost and the survivors.

Careful Andrew, you don't know his motives. Let the facts come out.

I don't know his motives, and I don't care about them. I cannot believe there can be any motive that justifies this act.

I dismiss to accept any motivation, and I can only call the author(s) as assasin(s), not giving them any adjective that may justify what he/they have done, even to himself/themselves

He certainly had far-right/neo-Nazi sympathies, and was strongly anti-Muslim, but no, we don't yet know all the details.

And you're running into politics, Andrew... Let's not go there.

Suffice it to say, it sucks badly, he's a nut job, and it doesn't matter for board discussion what his political leanings are, because even most of those sharing his political views don't share his methods.

I know someone in Norway; fortunately, she and her family are safe. Though as I was scared that she or a relative of hers were harmed, I know that my sympathy goes right out to everyone affected by it.

I hate sounding oldish, but this thread has reached the point where it would be placed into the Outhouse (sort of) and require the special password to get into it.

I believe that all of us here feel for the fear, loss and shock of what happened but maybe this thread should be locked with a note saying PM's should be sent to those who you wish to express graditudes to.

(One who got warned over bring up the American Revolution once on a thread that was non-political and talking history.)

Agreed. Aristotle said that if a man can not live in society then he must be either an animal or a god; I think I know in what camp this guy squarely sits. Unfortunately I think he believes the other.
