2015 Conventions and Traveller

So my wife and daughter are driving to Raleigh to see David Tennent (Dr. Who) at ComiCon, and I am shocked that they are the first in our family to go to a convention. My dream as an 11-year-old in 1984 was to attend GenCon, and it never happened!

This means I get a free pass to attend a convention - where should I go?

I am wondering what conventions are going on the rest of this year that will have some Traveller presense. I know Adam Dray posted that he held some games at a Double Exposure in NJ. What else is out there? Will TravellerCon happen again this year?

Let's talk about what's out there convention-wise for Traveller fans.

North Texas RPG Con has 3 Traveller games scheduled (all Classic Traveller I believe):

The games (note that Mike is a published Traveller author):

Mike Kelly -- At the Imperium's End Times
Mike Kelly -- The Millenium Girl
Stan Shinn -- The Neutron Star Directive

I believe the normal plan is for TravellerCon in Lancaster, PA to happen every year around Columbus Day Weekend. KMFrye on CotI is the normal coordinator for this event.

It currently only has the 2014 event info up, but presumably that will change?

I think it would be particularly awesome if we had a calendar here on the site where people could post info about cons that will have Traveller-related stuff. This could be anything from a game being run to letting us know that any of the companies that make Traveller stuff are going to be there.

I know I would love to go to a con and meet some fellow Travellers. My problem is that it would have to be in the northeast (NY, NJ, PA, CT) area and I always seem to find out *after* the fact.

It is my understanding that TravellerCon will be held in Lancaster again this year. I'm not involved in the running of the convention but I have spoken with Keith and know that he intends to do it this year on the same weekend as last year's con. I will be running Traveller (set in our Clement Sector setting) there again this year.

I know you are in the northeast and this may not help but I also run Traveller at several conventions in the southeast. I ran games at MystiCon in Roanoke, Virginia and I'm scheduled to run games at LibertyCon in Chattanooga, TN in the summer.

Here is the link to MystiCon's website. I will be there next year as well.

This is LibertyCon.

Looks like you're in New Jersey. This page has some cons listed in Virginia, DC and Maryland.

(I would love to see a page like this covering all North America.)

I'm actually on Long Island, so those locations are a bit far, but it would be nice to have a resource like that for the country.

Though if I start planning now I think I have a good chance of making TravellerCon. Lancaster isn't to far and it's not expensive.

DickNervous, I am actually in NJ. A bit closer then LI, but not much.

If there was one big event, I wouldn't mind traveling. I am guessing Indy GenCon is the biggest event - is there ever any Traveller activities/games/booths there?

Yes, I was referring to Nathan when I mentioned NJ. Not that Long Island is THAT much further. :)

My wife is from Brentwood, L.I. I grew up in southern Mississippi. We're almost as different as Solomani and Vilani!

It's on the other side of NYC, may as well be in a different galaxy. :)

I highly recommend it. While the convention itself is very small (its all in one ballroom), it is completely made up of Traveller fans. There were about 4-5 games going on at any one time.

If you're a Traveller fan and you're anywhere near the area, I recommend going. Heck, I'm in Georgia and I'm definitely going to be there.

>>Heck, I'm in Georgia ...

John W, do you go to any local cons (GA, or Chatt area)? I've loved going to DragonCon, but I missed it last year, and may miss it again this year, due to job issues. But I do enjoy the smaller ones - went to TimeGate (DrWho/Stargate themed) a couple years ago, and may hit it again this year.

I'm pretty sure I will be there, with one of the players from my Traveller group. I asked if he would like to go on a road trip to TravellerCon and he said "Hell yeah!" before I was done... :)

I plan to go back to TravellerCon in 2015 and run some stuff. I've run my Nova Roma scenario three times now (once at TravellerCon 2014, twice at Dreamation in NJ) and it rocks. I will probably run it again at TravellerCon, plus who knows what else I'll dream up before then.

I've been wanting to do a pure trade-based game.

I have to keep an eye out for Dreamation - sounds like a closest thing to me here in NJ.

I would definitely be interested in a trade-based game.

It's in Morristown. The same con organizer runs three other cons at the Hyatt there: DEXcon (gaming), Metatopia (gaming with a focus on game designers), and Maelstrom (gaming with a focus on inclusivity). They're all great conventions.

I actually live in the Chattanooga metro area. I go to both ChattaCon and LibertyCon every year. I was the Featured Gaming Guest at this past ChattaCon and I'm a guest at this year's LibertyCon.

I'm going to be running one game of Traveller (in our Clement Sector setting) at FantaSciCon in Dalton, GA on Friday evening. I was originally going to be there for the entire weekend but some other plans jumped into the way.

Looks like next year we'll be at ConNooga as well. Over the past few years, it has been the same weekend as MystiCon in Roanoke, Virginia where I have been a guest for several years now and hope to continue to be in the future. This year, it appears ConNooga will be the week before MystiCon.

I'm very much hoping to get to MACE in Charlotte, NC this year but I'm not sure we'll be able to swing it. In addition, we're hoping to get to GnomeCon in Savannah next year as well.

I used to go to DragonCon quite a bit in the old days. I've not been in well over ten years. The Kramer Controversy is why I stopped going originally and, after the smoke cleared on that, I just never returned.

One of my playtesters has really been bugging me about getting to TimeGate. I'm probably not going to make it this year but it is on my list of "maybes" for next year.

Excellent! I'm really sorry I missed out on playing in it at TravellerCon.

Nathan,

I'm in South Amboy, less than 20 miles from you.
I've been to Gencon and Origins as a worker and a gamer. I am also staff for Lunacon though that is not a gaming convention.

Let's talk

Marc
