2100 AD: Escape from Purgatory

Werner

SOC-13
High in the clouds of Venus, there is a maximum security prison named Purgatory, there a bunch of political prisoners are kept, they are charged with various crimes, but the real reason they are there is because they have run afoul of the megacorporation Cybercom, the Purgatory Prison is a giant dirigible about a kilometer wide, it is filled with breathable gases that are lighter than the surrounding atmosphere, therefore it floats. Purgatory drifts with the Venusian Jetstream going around the planet every four days. The inmates of Purgatory are put to various tasks with the long term goal of terraforming the planet. This could be an introductory adventure for the PCs. A number of comets are heading toward impact with the planet, they carry a vital ingredient that the planet lacks, water.

Out at the Venus-Sun L1 point is a giant solar shade periodically blocking all sunlight from reaching the planet for 12 hours at a time, followed by only partially blocking sunlight for 12 hours allowing for Earth levels of Sunlight, although the Sun's disk still appears larger as seen from the cloud tops than from Earth, from Purgatory's perspective it experiences two 12-hour periods of daylight separated by two 12-hour periods of night, this means the total solar illumination Venus receives over a 4 day period is about the same Mars gets with the cloud tops reflecting most of that back into space. Venus holds a lot of hear however, it will take centuries to cool down.

Venus gets over a 4 day period a total of 24 hours of Earth level sunlight and 60 hours of darkness when you add in the part of the planet facing away from the Sun, which gets a full 48 hours of darkness during that time.

You might ask, why is Cybercom terraforming Venus, for what nefarious purpose is it doing this? Well the chairman and CEO of Cybercom, Alfred Gordon, believes in making a second home for humanity, it is a long term goal he realizes, he is not above idealism, but the main reason for it is that Cybercom expects to make immediate profits from this project, which is expected to take 400 years to see through till completion and the six major powers of Earth are contracting subsidiaries of Cybercom to undertake this project, off of which Cybercom stands to make a nice profit, thus enriching CEO Alfred Gordon and Cybercom's shareholders, the money comes from taxpayers and Cybercom sees to it that its subsidiaries get most of the major contracts, and it makes use of prison labor to lower the labor costs.

I dunno about Cybercom, but I am so stealing that prison.
Cybercom is a fictional corporation based on some real ones that I shall not mention. The villain is of a type that I call the puppet master. It's a vertically integrated mega corporation, it influences the politics of a number of nations, and gets those countries to do things which end up profiting Cybercom. The prisoners are from a bunch of different countries, some are just thugs, some are political revolutionaries who's revolutions failed, some are underworld figures that Cybercom decided to get rid of and were arrested and then rented to to Cybercom as involuntary labor. Cybercom has tentacles in everything both legal and illegal.

Interesting problem: total heat in Venusian atmosphere and crust, radiation rates, total cooling time required... I'd guess that 400 years is far too short.

Too short for what? To get an Earthlike planet so you can live on its surface unaided? I'm sure some improvements can be made in 400 years so the Venusian environment is not quite as lethal. Maybe we could for example, get rid of the clouds of sulfuric acid.

400 years is rather arbitrary, maybe Cybercom thought that a longer planning horizon would undermine public support for the project, and they want to cash in, so they built up public expectations that it could be done in 400 years. They could always extend it when the 400 year period is nearly up and say, "we got this far, why stop now?"

Also higher it the atmosphere it will be cooler than on the ground, one can still live in balloon habitats in the meantime.
