237 years of the US Marine Corps

Ya'll have heard that the Marine Corps has switched to using powdered soap in the shower and bathing areas, neh?

It takes them longer to pick up when dropped...

BOHICA!

Riik

;)

Happy Birthday Marines!

For a large number of PDF downloads of Marine Corps histories, go to the following website:

https://www.mcu.usmc.mil/historydivision/Pages/Staff/Publications.aspx#2001

All are official histories and therefore public domain material as US government publications.

Of particular interest for ideas for Traveller adventures or campaigns, you might want to look at the following.

One Hundred Eighty Landings of the United States Marines, 1800-1934. Capt Harry A. Ellsworth, USMC. 1934. 1974 reprint. 163 pp.

The Diplomatic Mission to Abyssinia, 1903. Bernard C. Nalty. 1958. 39 pp. 1961 rev. ed.

Marine Amphibious Landing in Korea, 1871. Carolyn A. Tyson. 1966. 24 pp. (Published by Naval Historical Foundation).

And for a feel for small unit actions:

Small Unit Action in Vietnam, Summer 1966. Capt Francis J. West, Jr., USMCR. 1967. 1977 reprint. 123 pp.

Hollywood Marine

I stepped on the yellow footprints back in 1984. We had a saying, join the marines, see the world and clean it...

I went to 8th and I last night for the evening parade. Careful reservations a while ago resulted in chairs right at the front.

1. Barracks row itself is a stretch of pretty nice mid priced bars and the usual cleaners/shops.
2. The poor guys on libo were forced to wear tucked in polos and khaki pants. It looked stupid.
3. I never owned blues and wore the alphas (blouse uniform) less than 6 times after boot, and the charlies (khaki shirt) less than 10. I also marched almost never. It was odd to see that part of the Corps.
4. Very well done ceremony. It wastes the services of 200 good Marines for two years, but well done. A show piece of the Corps.

Side note: the area is ghetto, about to be pushed out to other side of the river and Prince Georges. You can see the holes where they are turning rat traps into million dollar condos. Construction everywhere, with guards to keep the equipment from being looted.

Color Guard

I had a set of Dress Blues when was a Lance Corporal. They Looked MUCH better after I made Corporal and had the Blood stripe down the outside seem.
I was a member of the Color Guard for the Birthday Ball every year I was in from 76 to 80.
When I made E-5 my mother added my stripes to them instead of the cleaners.
Sadly, my Ex-wife destroyed all my photos before we got divorced :(

Chuck, it's too bad about your photos. Mine were lost in a similar way. You have the images in your mind. We all see the dividend of our service, every day. I think my ex wife 'lost' or destroyed my marine pics because she thought I valued the Corps above her. Well she was right one time in our marriage, good for her...

There also should be a few in your Personnel record. Write NPRC and ask.

My wife did some I love me combos of my stripes, cover, ribbons. I also have an NCO sword.

My favorite photo is a bunch of us on a beach north of Pohang in full 782 gear and flaks, drinking those glass bottle cokes. That means more than a picture of me in the fake blues in boot or one of the few times we wore alphas.

Old school Marine, 77 to 83 myself.

I can still remember arriving on the Island, standing on those yellow footprints at 1 AM and saying to myself...
WHAT THE HELL DID I GET MYSELF INTO?

Now I'm wondering what I may have missed.

I enlisted in the Army, and when I ETS'd I had a Marine recruiter calling me, wanting to join the Corps...

I got separated after US Army basic. I walked into my folks' house, and as I entered, the phone rang... SSgt Randy Coture, USMC Recruiter. Offered to get my bar to reenlistment lifted and my E3 reinstated if I'd join the corps. (I declined.)
