4th Edition Traveller

Kinjiro

SOC-8
Ok, don't burn me for this question. I just thought I would ask since I have not found anything about this, and it could be that I have just missed the thread...

Is there any plans for there to be a 4th edition Traveller, with the new D20 system?

Very True, I have see very little of the licensing but it does seem that it is more restrictive than 3.5. But it would be challenging. Has the thought been thrown out to try and do it? And if it is even possible to do it?

Well, there's an even bigger stumbling block. Marc W Miller has set up the licensing such that T20 will not be renewed. In a couple years more or less it'll only be GURPS Traveller, Mongoose Traveller, and Traveller 5.

From everything I have been able to gather basically you will not be able to duplicate any of the rules from 4e, only reference them in the appropriate book. This makes say altering combat to more suit a science-fiction genre much more difficult.

Also the 'free' licensing isn't going to be available until Jan '09, a full six-months after the release of 4e. We could get access and make products available sooner if we want to fork out $5k to WotC. For a 5 month head start on everyone else. That means I have to sell $12,500 worth of product in that period through distribution to make $5k. And that doesn't even consider my development costs, printing costs, etc...

If I were interested in doing Fantasy, I'd jump on it. But since I'm not, I'm not ;)

Besides, wouldn't it be better to wait for 4E Modern in 2009 anyway, if SciFi20 weren't coming around the bend? With 4E Modern, you'd get the best of both worlds, and you'd get around that whole 5K thing that WOTC is doing right now.

With Regards,
Flynn

I have enjoyed the setting so much, and I guess I was just hoping that Traveller was going to go 4th edition. But I understand with the Cost and Time that would needed to be involved. I also plan on getting Traveller 5. :)

I am going to point out that the T20 rules work. There is no real need for an update. They definitely give you the feel of Classic Traveller with the D20 rule set. Just because a new edition comes out, that doesn't make your old rules, that work, useless.

I just ordered my Traveller Guidebook for Players, but as I recall the intention, when you combine the TGP and the Traveller's Handbook, that makes the system standalone anyway.

From what I have seen so far, the 4th ed version will not necessarily be the best for a Traveller type game, anyway. It looks like it would be more suited toward space opera than hard SF.

I agree that the current rules work just fine and I have no problems with running or playing 3.5 T20. I was just curious if it there was going to be a T20 4th edition.

Funny enough, the THB says you need a D20 3.0 core rule book, not 3.5. :) I wouldn't be surprised if it worked just as well under 4.0. :)

I don't think T20 is 'broken', there are just aspects of it I'm not happy with. And the new version was something I've been considering for awhile. The change in the Traveller licenses just prompted me to start moving a little earlier.

Yup.

Yup.
From a licensing standpoint, there is a reason for an update.

From a Traveller standpoint, the only thing broken in the T20 rules is Large ship combat.

I will happily use these rules for any future Traveller campaign I run. I have CT, MT and TNE (If I can find the TNE rulebook).

I thought CT was too disorganized, with too many obscure and inconsistent modifiers.

MT changed combat so much that any body armor at all made characters virtually immune to small arms, required a computer, before personal computers were available, just to design a Scout Ship and had so much bad proof reading that Broken Ships of the Shattered Imperium is the common name for the Naval ship book.

TNE, I never thought the rules were worth more than a couple of glances and disliked the setting.

T20, gives us the feel of CT while organizing the rules and making them more internally consistent. Vehicles and Starships can now be easily and consistently designed and can take part in combat at the RPG man on the ground level.

So I'll keep these rules. :)

Much appreciated! :)

Have you looked over the new rules I'm working on in the Moot?

Take a look at the latest when you get the chance. It's still pretty much T20, but just a lot more flexible (IMO). Though Aramis and Gallow broke part of it the other day... :p

I took a closer look, and read the comments so far. I wrote up my observations. Personally I could use an update to GRiP long before I need those. :)
