A time-consuming passtime

Absent Friend
I just spent the entire afternoon creating one (count them: one) T20 character. And I thought GURPS characters took time!

Granted, I'll probably get faster with a bit of practice, but still...

Prior history takes a while

Leveling up takes a while.

T20 requires that you do prior history and level up multiple times. However I can coach a newbie player who tells me what s/he wants and is willing to trust me and not have to read every skill/feat listing for themselves through a character from initial die rolls to buying equipment in ...if all goes well... less than two hours.

The thing I like about a T20 character is that you have a character that is more filled out than a D&D character, this is worth the extra time it takes for the creation process and once you get used to it you will be churning out characters in no time.

What he said.

It it IS a bit kludgy and can slow RIGHT down if your players pick and choose each feat and each skill point spent with labourious exactitude.

However, you really end up with an amazing base on which to play a character. you know quite abit about what that character has done. you still have lots of room to decide who s/he is.

For "faster" generation:-

Don't level up till prior history is complete. Don't allow multi-classing.
i) Roll up stats.
ii) Roll through terms for your chosen class.
iii) Total Skills = Skills per level + Int bonus (each skill is max rank) - Class Skills only
iv) Total feats is easy as well (due to lack of multi-class) - only let them chose class feats.

End result - character who is much "flatter" than a properly generated one, elapsed time 10 minutes max per.

Once they are playing, allow them to "split" their skill points off (to other skills) - unless they have already used the skill at it's current level.

Of course, next time they level up, they will take some time trying to decide what to multi-class to next - then how to work it all out.

And next character they play will probably take a couple of days to generate: glorying in the details that you previously denied them.
