An interesting alternative world map projection

This map projection flattens a sphere into two circles while attempting to minimize distortion, and also makes it possible to simply flip over the disc if it is two sided and continue travelling. I could imagine superimposing a hex grid on this and having a much simpler system than our traditional unwrapped dodecahedron.
