Anyone want to try the IRC thing again?

I've been thinking, it's been a while since I've used my IRC client for anything and I know that there was an attempt to run a Traveller chat earlier. Does anyone want to set a time and "place" and try it again.

Later,
Mark A. Siefert

Though we havn't been using IRC several of us have been chatting in real time on Sundays using MSN's web based chat service. A link that will drop you directly into the chat room itself is usually posted to the 'Lone Star Chat' topic around 1pm EST, so you don't have to hunt through a hideous interface to join the conversation.

Now I know that most folks have a problem with anything 'Microsoft' I do myself as well, however it's been the quickest, most convenient, and easy method to use so far... especially since LisaGB provided the original URL. I myself am rather lazy and just cut/paste the URL from a text file to the message board when I post it.

The folks whom usually show up are Capt. Blacklight, Bruce, Liam Devlin, Mapsy and Myself, however Hunter, MJD, and LisaGB have each popped in at least once. There have been a couple others as well but I don't remember any names.

I would like to say hello but I always arrived late. Maybe next time.

P.S. I would like MSN much more. I HATE IRC.

Well I don't have a problem with MS - it's just that my Computer runs on Linux, and MSN requires a .net Account and MS Internetexplorer on Win or Mac. So the prob is not that I don't want to use MSN chat but I cannot for technical reasons. (and no it's not possible to make a Windowspartition, 'cause my compi is a SGI and there's no Windows for R cpus - I have only the choice between Linux and Irix - none of them work with MSN)

That'S why I would be glad if there would be an IRC chat too. But if everybody else want's MSN I have no problem with it and won't damm them

I find most Chat programs to be too big. Certainly to big to have more than one on my dinosaur of a comp.

I'm looking into a 'generic' chatter called trillian.

supposedly it does yahoo, MSN, and ICQ. all in one proggy. Does anyone know if MSN chat rooms are compatible with this program?

In the mean time I think I have my ICQ listed on my profile and If I'm on my computer it's usually up.

Yes, it can do MSN chat. Trillian is a really nice chat program. I now use it instead of AIM and ICQ.

Jeez, I don't show up one stinkin' week and I'm already off the list? :( LisaGB wouldn't have forgotten me so quickly (or at least I can keep telling myself that)!

Or maybe some of us are just special

It's not that I have a selective memory... :(

I don't have any memory at all!

I'm lucky if I remember who I am from week to week. My best hope is that I die before I go senile :D

Seriously though, I didn't mean to forget anybody I just jotted off the names I could remember in the half minute I spent writing the message. I'm sorry :(

Forgive me?

As far as the Linux problem goes I suppose untill we get a better soloution that will work for everyone we can keep using MSN. I don't want to leave anyone out just because of a few technical issues. My personal fave method is IRC and I was quite surprised to find out that a good number of the the old IRC commands I could remember worked on MSN.

My only problem for the moment is that I don't have an IRC client installed on any of my pc's. I havn't touched a Macintosh since OS 6. My Linux box doesn't have a nic or modem and it's a learning machine to mess with. I'm not much of a Linux person, need to format & reinstall it anyway. My 2k box is in pieces spread all over the dining room floor waiting to be rebuilt when I get around to it. Same goes for my Classic Games 98 machine.

Ack! I'm down to one working computer! :(

Can anyone recommend a good free WinXP IRC client?

What is 4pm EST in common time?

I figured you probably were talking about an East Coast American zone which would be Z-5 ish. Am I close?

EST means "Eastern Standard Time" in Australia (Z+10) However Sydney is currently in "Eastern Standard Summer TIme" (ESST). When people were giving the time in EST, I was confused for a little while.

I was always very satisfied with mirc - Http://www.mirc.com - those times ago when I used windows. The new release works with XP as far as I know ('though you should enter Unix for your OS in the configuration settings for the serverconnection - you'll get a better connection, no joke)

Btw. as stated before if all are happy with MSN stick to it, I don't feel locked out. Due to my job i doubt that I'd be able to chat more than once or twice month. And there's the time problem too - I'm sitting in central Europe and when the time is convenient for a chat in the US it's usually a bit inconvenient over here and vice versa.
Nice surf!

We'll be seeing you again Sunday Eak! Have to clean up the house and all first though-been a weekend!
And the rest of you (RV, T Foster, Silver marble, CPT BL, Maspy, Bruce, And the rest of you who drop in/ stop by, etc). Maybe even LisaGB may stop in (if she's over the RL Man troubles)?

I understand the EST-etc confusion, that's an american time zone conceit admittedly. I live in the Central time zone meself. Its back to work fer me at 2200hrs CST. It wasn't meant intentionally to throw off anyone-like Kentares, or Mink. Honest guys.

Looks like I won't be able to join in.

Work starts at 9ish monday morning - which is 11pm Z (Sunday) - which is 6pm on most of east coast america.

There... I've just posted a chat announcement to the Lone Star Chat thread.

I'll post the link when I open the room around 1300hrs Sunday for those of you whom may be able to attend.

P.S. Just in case anyone was curious about it. I've discovered that URL's posted to the CotI Message board can't be any longer than approximately 180 characters in length. If they're over this limit it automatically adds a space after the 180th character when it parses the message.
