Taking a lesson from HP Lovecraft's "At the Mountains of Madness", I wonder if the some Ancients are accidently reawoken from suspended animation, and are just as eager, as HPL's Elder Things, to experiment on their human protégés (lab rats) and discover how they have developed over the last few millennia?
Such investigations would, of course, need to be extremely hands on, and involve painful!/fatal tests of intelligence/problem solving, strength, pain threshold, temperature & radiation & poison tolerances etc.
Ship coming out of jump or a small base, filled with tortured and/or dissected occupants, would be the result.
Maybe Twilight's Peak is not so much fun after all?!
