Black globes

SOC-12
A question for the wise.

What year (approx) did the Imperium start using black globes ?

I'm setting an adventure for the Rim War and plan on involving one but it suddenly occured to me that I didn't know when they became available to the navy

Many thanks.

Try Adventure 12 Secret of the Ancients. The imperium discovered a cache of over 2000 ancient black globes at a secret ancient site on Knorbes? in the Regina subsector. They spent sometime reverse engineering them and produce the Factor 1 -4 globes currently available.

They were mounted on the original Korriak dreadnaughts they must have been available when these ships were first constructed - see supplement 9.

I will have a look and see it they give a specifc date.

Cheers
Richard

Hello fellow Travellers,

Kinda going off topic a bit, but not really...

In "The Mote in Gods Eye" IIRC the Imperial Navy was able to place a remote sensor outside of their Langston Fields. Why can't we do this with Black Globes in Canon?

Second, what TL are White Globes?

You could do that outside of a black globe, but unless you drop the globe you can't get any data from it.

In MegaTraveller White Globes are described for TL 20 and TL 21 (the max in the design sequences for most items). Found something I had forgotten about while checking that, right above it is a table for Proton Screens to shield against antimatter missile warheads, yet another fun toy. They come in at TL 19 but the power and volume is huge, especially compared to the White Globe.

You can 'poke' things through the Langston field: telescopes, aerials, missiles, nukes. So a remote sensor could either communicate via wire or to an antenna poked out through the unthreatened side of the field (if there were one). Anything sticking out generally got zorched off when laser fire first hit the field...

The Langston field in the Mote in Gods eye and related books seems to be the quivlant of a Traveller White Globe as vessels fight with the field up and are able to use their beam weapons througth the field. Their are a couple of descriptions of ship battles in the sequal to Mote In gods eye and in the otherwise Naff war world series their is an extensive navel battle from the Sauron war in war world 2
