Book; David Weber's "Apocalypse Troll"
Oh man, I haven't read this thing since it was first published, and believe you me, if you've ever read any of the Keith brother's first five or six books in the CARRIER series (penned under the pseudonym of "Keith Douglass"), and have a knack and love of science fiction, then you'll probably like this book. Like the back reads; "The United State Navy verses UFOs" ... a plain and apt description.
Film; "Robot Carnival";
This is probably the best anime I have in my collection next to the official "Macross; Do You Remember Love?" DVD of the feature film, and maybe one or two Miyazaki titles. It's a collection of short stories with robots as the main theme, and the films inside the larger film deliver. If you can find an official VHS copy, then give it a whirl. I have the ultra rare region 2 DVD from Japan, complete with a booklet in Japanese with the thoughts of the directors on their work. See it once.
