OTU Only: Canon and naval unit organization and TO&E

I wish to get some clarification on what is Canon sources for Naval unit organization and TO&E.

Having been told that Fighting Ships of the Shattered Imperium (FSSI) is not considered cannon. Ok the ships are clearly not kosher. But can we consider the Rebellion Sourcebook (TRS) canon? If so where FSSI agrees with TRS it then too would be canon, no?

I know both Grand Fleet and Sector Fleet aren't Cannon. There are some things that are good there but Sector Fleet needs some editing and rethinking.

So lets have a list of canon sources.

Then list the degree than noncanon sources agree with or DON'T contradict canon,

Ok?

You've got, for the 900-1150 range in the OTU
CT Sup 5: Azhanti High Lightning
CT Sup 8 & 11: Library Data
CT Sup 9: Fighting Ships
CT Game 4: Fifth Frontier War
CT module Spinward Marches Campaign
MT Rebellion Sourcebook
MT Imperial Encyclopedia
T20 TA7 Fighting Ships

The only explicitly decanonized bits are, last I heard
MT Fighting Ships of the Shattered Imperium - it disagrees generally with both other MT sources
CT Adv 5: TCS - and not that the book is decanonized, just the fleet budget formulae.

The Dubious list:
T20: Grand Fleet (IIRC, released by Comstar/Avenger - not in hunter's release files.)
MGT: Sector Fleet - same author, mostly the same text.

You mean the formula to determine how much each system has available for naval expenditures? Was it replaced by something?

It has been used by numerous gamers to try to establish an Imperium wide budget and in that context it does not generate sensible numbers. Arguably this was not an anticipated use of the formula, otherwise my understanding is that use within the TCS campaign presented is fine.

Heh. "does not generate sensible numbers" is a tad of an understatement :D It was comically described to me several years back: "It's akin to adding two plus two and getting the GNP of Paraguay in the good ol' bad ol' days"

What about CT M03 Module 03 Spinward Marches Campaign?

Are there any JTAS pieces or In any of Digest Group stuff that fits here?

Also what about what is OTC for pre 800 to year 0? And before?

Dare I mention Marc Miller's Traveller (aka T4) "Imperial Squadrons"?

As well as having a system to determine Fifth Frontier War-type counters from ship stats and a wargame engine derived from a merger of FFW and TCS, it has some details of the Imperial Navy and its vessels in the first century of the Third Imperium.

It is canon, bur for a different t I me frame.

As for SMC it, too, is canon for the late 3i era. It doesn't discuss general fleet org, but gives a specific example.
