Changes to Character Gen

Pondering basic and advanced character gen and I am kinda digging the special event role from MT.

Though numerous Zero level skills are kind tempting.

I not sure if it is more skills or the appearance of more that attracts me.

I converted over to CE, and added a bunch of professions, and some elements from MT and adapted the Cyberpunk Lifepath table (itself evidently inspired by Traveller CharGen). So everything has a Special Duty and Decorations roll, etc. Sometimes the decorations are simply bonus money (Rogues) and sometimes they're other special honors (Scientists). I found that these really do a decent job, in combination with the normal skill tables, of helping the player "create the narrative" of the character.

The one other thing I have done is create a series of, well, I guess it's like "kits" or "prestige classes" that players can attempt for based on their profession - things like being a part of the Imperial Guard, or a member of the Sword World Dueling Society, that come with some extra skills and modifiers to the normal CharGen process.

Now, I run a very space opera game where I'm not bothered with heavy skill levels so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. But my players seem to enjoy it.

T5 has Level-0 skills, including extras you get from the trade codes of your homeworld. I also like the Fame system in T5 character generation which determines whether someone might have heard of your character.
