Character Sheet Variant: Critique Please

TravMongooseSheet.jpg

The black boxes underneath Racial Traits are a "micro data square" that I am working on for extended character details that hopefully will be readable in final pdf version.

The Gray Shading may have been overboard, as the object of this design is to save on Black Ink while bringing more cohesion to the sheet design.

Skill list should have 3 cols: Skill, level , exp.
Shading is a bit dark, but useful; alternative is to use thicker lines on the boundaries.

The Career History area seems really small to me. Maybe it should be moved to the back and expanded a little? I wonder how a 5 or 6 term career might be summarized neatly in the space provided. Of course, it could just be me. My writing is kind of sloppy.

I like it!

Can you additional ones for career lifepaths (in chargen), homeworlds and starships?

Nice Char sheet

Looking good. The major issues I have regarding the amount of space in certain areas can be taken care of by your micro data squares which would hold the additional data.

I'm working on a character sheet too. But I want mine to be displayable, and eventually (probably will be a long way off) created, updated, and saved on-line. I figured it would be easier to do it in excel and save the sheet as an html document than to code it myself.

One thing I might suggest if you want to regain a little space is a little redesign of the characteristics area.

I am using 2 squares for each characteristic unlike the 16 you have. One is for the value and the other the DM. Looks terrible in this format but just so you get the point:

Str Dex End Int Edu Soc
UPP
Modifiers

Also where it says "Image Area" on yours, mine says "Insert 165x150 Image". I thought it would be nice for people to easily know the image size when cropping or creating one.

I have found that by using a very fine line size, and a very fine point size for the font, that it is possible to do legible blocks of sheets as pdfs. I need to mess with it more, but the goal is to develop a card with a Caracter name, UPP and a bunch of these blocks covering background, ship sheets, all that. On the Pdf version of this sheet, for example, the white target squares inside the black square hold a good resolution into high magnifications, keeping alignment and placement after being scaled down.

It may be impractical to do, tho. Needs more experimenting.

I plan to do a whole series in the same vein for all aspects, Ships, Maps, all that. I seem to have some form of sheetomania.

I could really use a person that could work with me that could help me to get these projects shaped into a production order. Like someone to make a list of all that are required, and then to assign them at a reasonable rate of occurance. Maybe even a couple of people to help with editing and commenting, in addition to the posts like this.

Attack?

I was just totally redesigning my character sheet because it was originally "portrait" and for display on a computer I think "landscape" would be better.

I have a question for ya. What is the weapon attack column for?

I am not sure, i was going from the entry on the existing mongoose sheet. Maybe some kind of modifier area?

What made you decide on 165 by 150 for the image? I picked 2" x 2".

I draw these sorts of things on illustrator, rather than coding. The last time I tried coding for real real, I was put into a deep slumber by the activity. I approach it as drawing or as a graphic layout.

The image size was solely based on what fit after placing the other items. Like yours, the image is beside Name, Age and such so that is what determines the hight. The width is the same as what is in the column below it. After the redesign to a landscape page, it is currently 150w x 170h.

My new weapons data area includes space for recoil/heft, magazine size, and even spare ammo. I may change that Attack to Auto so you can indicate a weapons burst rate.

I'll post here when I've got it closer to a finished product and on the web site.

Why so many slots for armor?

Can you wear more tan one armor class (plus reflect)?

Personally, I'd reduce them and add some slots for squipment...

When you get your layout complete, will you be making the PDF fillable as a form? That could have a great influence on the usefulness and readability, as important and often-referenced information could be set to fill in a larger font, while career details (for example) might be set to a smaller font.

Also, for most of us, I suspect that typed and printed text is much clearer and easier to read (and therefore can be done legibly in smaller size) than our own handwriting. ;)
