Confused about Odyssey adventure

Hoping I can get a quick answer about this - the search engine was boogged by looking for 300 responses *sigh*...

In the Odyssey adventure, the planet Liar's Oath had the following UWP:

Liar’s Oath/Matarishan (1021-C4247A7-8)

It appears to have a trace atmosphere, 40% liquid (ice), etc... yet the adventure reads like the districts run by the Governer protagonist have "houses" and "estates: and "doors." I'm confused - is the atmosphere supposed to be standard or not? Am I reading this UWP right?

You're reading it right and it does throw up quite a conundrum, especially as the tech level is way too low for extensive sealed domes.

I didn't even spot this when I ran it myself. But then I transplanted it to the Spinward Marches and picked a suitable location based on the description rather than the UWP.

Atmos 2 is a very thin, tainted atmosphere. Marginally more hospitable than trace! With compressors being required for breathing the air.

I don't have "Odyssey" handy but this world appears in "The Kursis Charter".

In it it's mentioned that the cities consist of sealed building complexes, with controlled environments and connected by transit tubes.

Alternately, the definitions of "houses" and "estates" could be different on that planet (local usage of the words...). Perhaps a "house" is really an extensive warren of sealed, underground tunnels.

I haven't read the Odyssey adventure, so I'm guessing.

As for the tech level, I'd say TL8 could certainly create big enough sealed domes for a village sized area, or a smallish estate. After all, our Earth has produced such things as large game playing areas that are fully covered but have large empty volumes inside (usually in shapes that aren't as easy as a simple dome).

BTW "Kursis Charter" is a mini campaign that appears in the Linkworlds Cluster that comes with the T20 Referees Screen.

Thanks for the info...now it makes much more sense with sealed domes and transport tubes - and makes it much more "cool sci-fi" flavor than some bog standard atmosphere world.

I'd argue TL8 can maintain such tech, but I would guess it was built by offworld contractors...

Interestingly, it would explain the high law level and tough government - couldn't have the locals getting all uppity and braking the hab dome...

I love the fact the protagonist being rescued by the PCs is less than a nice person. Good morality play there...most players would probably investigate and then bail when they realize all parties involved are not "good".

As a tangent, do you think allowing sonic disruptors and electostunners (both from Star Frontiers) is too much? I would make them rare, controlled by law level - but I do love me those weapons. And weapons do limit themselves - in Star Frontiers they are ridiculously short-ranged.

'Kursis Charter' mentions that the cities aren't domed, but are made up of sealed building complexes. Also Vacc Suits are recommended because of the cold temperatures outside.

Stunguns and shock batons appear in TA1 'Personal Weapons of Charted Space'. If you haven't got it, I recommend it as a useful resource.

This reminds me of Pysadi, featured in The Traveller Adventure. The place is TL 4 but also has a tainted atmosphere.

The world has a Class C starport, and at first, I just figured facemasks were a big import.

But, then, I like scratching my head at these types of Traveller questions, and I got creative with it. The world's tech is about that of the US Civil War. There's a large ocean on Pysadi, and I decided that a certain type of nautical sponge was found early in the world's colonization. Filters are made locally from this sponge, which are strapped to leather head holsters. Thus, the 1860's tech provides a useable face mask.

And, just to shake things up a bit, I decided that this particular type of sponge is being harvested to extinction. So, the planet had to find another technology. With the help of some people at the local starport, cotton filters are now being created. But, they don't have the lifespan of the sponges, so they're much less useful (and price for the sponge masks remains high).

In short, I like looking at these types of things as a challenge. Each house on Pysadi, for example, isn't a sealed environment. But, they are carefully constructed, at low tech, to provide filtering at the non-sealed sections. One of the expenses of owning a home on Pysadi(or even an office building) is replacing those damn filters every month.

The filter business is big business on Pysadi.

See - THIS is what I love about Traveller. The alien/sci-fi aspect of the worlds based on atmosphere, hydrosphere and Tech Level.

The interplay between those 3 factors leads to some really cool sci-fi "feel". It is so much cooler than Star Wars, where practically every planet has a breathable atmosphere and most planets are at the same ultra-tech level.

Thanks for the great ideas! But don't knock TL8 - it should be able to handle the atmosphere. Perhaps not in an elegant way - I'm picturing big honking machinery with jets of steam and big steel doors a la the mars lab in Doom...
