I have heard mention that among other good information in Starship Operator's Manual, Vol. 1 is a breakdown of crew billets by ships system. I can't afford the going amazon price for this book http://www.amazon.com/Starship-Operators-Manual-Vol-Megatraveller/dp/B000EPID4G , nor can I find a legit channel for a PDF. Would one, or more, of you be kind enough to share your insight on this sort of crew breakdown?

depends on what you mean by breakdown.
It doesn't provide for more details as to how many do what than are already in the Ref's Manual; it does provide more detail about what exactly they do. In other words, it won't tell you that 3 of your 6 engineers are PO's nor that they are 4 PP 2 JD and 1 MD engineers (but you can infer that anyway from the RM rules), but it will tell you more about what keeps them busy during the week.

The real benefit, mechanics wise, is the more detailed rules for travelling in-system and via jump.
