CT Errata HG - Plasma Bays

Matt123

SOC-14 1K
Just creating a new database for what might become a database based HG ship designer (maybe) and came across this anomoly.

The 50 ton Bay table has both Plasma & Fusion guns finishing at TL12 & 14 respectively. I'm pretty sure this isn't meant to imply that at higher techs they don't exist.

What surprised me was that if you extrapolate the table to TL15, both Plasma & Fusion Bays are USP factor 9 with Plasma being the cheaper and EP efficient choice (after being the second rate choice TL12-14 based on the USP factor alone).

At this point I can't see a logical reason not to extrapolate the tables, so I'm doing so for my database (I can always take them out again later). Figured I would throw it to Don for inclusion (or not) in the next version of the CT Errata as well.

Cheers

Under a strict reading, if the system isn't there, it doesn't exist.

That never stopped me from extrapolating.

However, in a wargame, if one side gets it, the other side gets it too.

In roleplaying, that's irrelevant, of course, as "sides" invariably leapfrog their capabilities.

I've always read it as "further technological refinements were not possible, and this is the maximum effectiveness that these systems could achieve". So if I were to extrapolate, the result of "plasma beats fusion at TL 15" violates the technological postulates (stated and reasonably assumable) of the game, and I would not use that specific extrapolation.

If you want to extrapolate and have some "rules" behind you, look at the same table in MegaTraveller...

Or T20.

Especially since MT and T20 use the same ratings scale as CTHG for ship UCP's.

Interesting, in MT 50-ton Plasma gun bays stop at TL12 and Fusion gun bays take over from TL13 to 15. Yet turret weapons for both are listed up to TL16.

I think I'll backtrack on extrapolatring that table a little. There is still something odd with it, with the Fusion bay apparently not available at TL15 & I'm starting to think those Fusion Gun stats should have been for TL13-15 (not 12-14) as in MT, representing in part RandyB's comment, but applied only to Plasma bays.

Either way, its not worth an errata, I doubt anyone has a problem with TL14 Fusion Bays being used in TL15 ships.

T20 shows plasma factor 6 from TL 12 on; the technology is apparently fully mature at TL12. It shows Fusion factor 9 at TLs 14 and 15; there SHOULD be an improvement at TL15, but isn't. And a factor 9 50T bay is the same rating as 20 TL14 turret mounted fusion beams... which take a mere 20T, but 10hp... but the bay costs 10hp anyway...
