Custom Ship Weapons

Hi all,

This is my first post to this forum (and I have enjoyed reading the posts already here).

Anyway, I thing I wanted to try out was coming up with a custom system to design weapons for use in the ship design process (must be in my nature - I do reasearch and design on computer systems etc.). After playing around a bit I came up with a spreadsheet that allows me to design weapons that come in close to those in the main book but which allows me more lee way with what each ship has for weapons. I use type, range, TL and USP to determine the final Cost, Volume and EP

I have copied below a table of weapons designed this way - any comments or intrest in this?? (sorry about the format)

Weapon - the weapon name <Name TL Range - USP>
Vol - volume in vehicle units (don't ask _ I have been playing with the whole design process and got carried away)
MCr and EP - guess ;)
# Turret - Max that can fit in a turret
USP - USP of a single weapon (I have a formulae to calculate the USP of multiple weapons)
Range - I used the range in the book as the average and a max range of 2 to 3 times that.

No problem, or rather there is a fix, allow me to demonstrate the CODE feature (little button in the Instant UBB section).

I did change it a bit, streamlining it, hope I only cut out the repeated data and didn't mess up.

Thanks for showing me the code button (missed that one).

As to more - I have broken the design of turrets, barbettes (they can now hold all types of goodies and are a nice middle ground between turrets and bays for mid size ships), 50 and 100 ton bays and spinal mounts. I am now working on custom missiles (and adding a torp class as well).

I also saw some discussion on custom computers but never saw an outcome, which got me thinking - so I am working on that part of the spreadsheet as well.

As I am at work right now and all my files are at home I will post some of the new weapons up when I eventually get home.

As a bigger task I am trying to unify the vehicle and star ship construction process (ie use standrad measurements etc. As I am fairly hard core sci oriented I have tweaked a lot of stuff (which means my designs are not standard but given it takes but a couple of minutes to use my spreadsheet - what the hey ;) ).
 
Thanks for that - food for thought. It would be fairly simple to allow for a range of sizes in all areas as the spreadsheet I am using works out the number allowed by calculating the volume of the turret (or bay or spinal mount) usable for weapons (percentage) and then dividing the space by the size of the weapon to get the number allowed (you can specify any number).

Now that it is the weekend (so soon now) I will have time to put up more info and do some mods, and play some more and ..... ;)

Oh yeah - I have made it so that spinal mounts can be like bays etc in that they can be a collection of the same weapon rather then one big one - made more sense. Whoops - clients coming ... :(
 
Hi,

Just a quick post with some sample weapons from all size categories and some missiles. This uses a similar construction rule for all items and factoring an sliding scale for the effect of increasing base USP. For spinals I am playing with using either 125% or 150% of the volume as the final volume of the mount. You can mount more then one unit as a spinal as long as you have the space and can link them like batteries if they are identical.

Factors used are :

I have it in Open Office but that converts very well to Excel.

The design rules aren't quite finalised yet as I am now playing with allowing the designer to select the G's of the missile and also looking at options for guideance.

Guidance options so far played with are :

  • Standard (your basic T20 missile which appears to be guided by the gunner)</font>
  • Smart (can actively track a target after you have locked it on - TL gives some bonus to hitting / evading PD)</font>
  • Seeker (fire it off and it finds the target based on it's own scanning - lots of work on this yet)</font>
  • Mine (it waits around and uses IFF to attack targets)</font>
Other options (just ideas I have) could be

  • Follower (you fire them and they then follow the ship until targets are assigned)</font>
  • Flicker (able to do small jumps - torps only probably)</font>
  • Multi warhead (lots of smaller warheads to overwhelm PD's)</font>
  • ECM and ECCM</font>
  • PD Missiles</font>
You know, every time I post something here I end up coming up with a lot more ideas ..... :D

Anyway, when I have this all sorted out I will put it up somewhere - anyone got any ideas where is a good place to put this up?? :confused:

Click the menu tab "fLibrary" right up at the top of the page. Then use the "Add a Resource" button the left. Easy, and thank you in advance :D
 
I have placed the spreadsheet on the download page for epople to play with. It is open office format as excel was 705K as opposed to 28K (ouch).

If you really want the excel version let me know.

The spreadsheet is a beta for the design of custom ship weapons and is a subset of a full spreadsheet for ship design based around integrating the vehicle design process. It allows you to select TL, Range, USP and type and then calculates the Volume (uses volume not dTons - divide by 1400 to get dTons), MCr and EP for the weapon as well as the maximum that can be installed in a turret, barbette or bay. Spinals are also included.

Has a very draft version of a missile creator that has added rockets (smaller missile with short range) and Torps (big missiles) but these are very draft.

Lastly, it has a battery USP calculator - see how it goes
