Diamond Planet

Imagine the income to a free trader for that!

Yeah ! However, I also imagine it being declared an instant red zone by the De Beers Mining company* and surrounded with dreadnaughts........

*who, being harder to kill than cockroaches, will doubtless still be around and making sure engagement rings are expensive...;)

Scooped for sure, but about 35 years late. I think this was first postulated in the 1970s, though there was no way to verify the theory.

It was briefly speculated that either Jupiter or Satrn might have a diamond core because of the crushing gravity and probable abundance of carbon molecules. But it was just a notion.

A planet unto itself made completely of crystalized carbon... that would be interesting.

Yeah, you could call it "Midnight" and run tours across it's surface.

Okay, apart from their industrial uses, would diamonds still be so highly prized in the "far future"? Finding a diamond planet might be no more special than finding a planet of copper.

They're only artificially highly prized now :)

As for industrial uses seems to me some of Traveller's future tech would beat it hands down. Glassteel, Bonded Superdense... who needs diamonds?

I've got 5 credits on this one:

I'll bet it's the compressed core of a gas giant whose surface gas layer had been blown off first from the nova explosion of it's parent star and then from the ionizing rays of the pulsar corpse. And that it is still spiraling in to neutron doom, soon to generate a GRB when it gets eaten.

Did any of you see these articles?

:)

Several places, including here on CotI yesterday :)

You've been scooped ;) (though, like some others, I suspect you generally don't drop into Random Static for whatever reasons so adding it here is ok)

And a very similar find was discussed in the Imperial Interstellar Scout Service section back on 22 June of this year:
Buy this for your fiance.

Heh :) .... I don't get it.

Hell nowadays give some folks around where I live a starship and a copper planet would be gone in hours.
