Dreenga: Geonee Plasma Dagger

Dreenga (Geonee Plasma Dagger)

An Alien Cultural Weapon for Classic Traveller

The dreenga or Geonee plasma dagger is a unique weapon based on an Ancients artifact discovered long ago in the Ruins of Dreen, an Ancients site located in the Shiwonee system. Whatever the original item had been, Geonee technicians were able to reverse-engineer the artifact, resulting in the plasma dagger. The dreenga is a favored personal weapon among the most successful Geonee merchants and highborns. Indeed, the weapon is expensive to replicate, and therefore only the wealthiest of Geonee males carry it as a prized possession and as a status symbol. Any male Geonee character may select the dreenga as a cascade under the Blade Combat skill. Non-Geonee do not have an opportunity to train in this weapon, and will be penalized with the untrained weapons usage penalty of -5.

When de-activated, the dreenga is simply a short metallic blade handle about 13cm in length. A small pressure-sensitive button quickly activates the energy weapon, instantly creating a shaft of pulsating plasma about 20cm in length. It is not understood how the device manages to maintain the plasma in its semi-solid state. The dreenga's plasma blade can penetrate through all but the toughest layer of armor. On a modified die roll of 14+, the weapon manages to sever an appendage (e.g. hand, forearm or tentacle) from its target provided the target has an appendage that can be severed. This is in addition to the 4d6 damage that the weapon inflicts upon a successful hit.

The dreenga is powered by compressed plasma gas contained in small rod-like tubes which are then inserted into the handle of the weapon. Each tube contains enough plasma energy to power the weapon for about one hour of active use. The weapon is complemented by a portable converter/recharger which can be plugged into starship power sources. By cannibalizing the ship's source of liquid hydrogen, the plasma converter/recharger can recharge the spent tubes, one at a time. The recharging process requires 30 minutes. The converter/recharger device weighs 5 kilograms, and the small plasma tubes have negligible weight. Replacing a spent plasma tube with a fully charged one requires one combat round (two if evading).

Dagger weight is 350 grams. TL16. Available on TL16 Geonee worlds only. Cr40,000 (this price includes the dagger, the portable converter/recharger and three plasma tubes).

Designer's notes:

1) The Geonee plasma dagger damage is 'deadly enough' for Classic Traveller weapons. It is on par with the damage delivered by entry-level energy weapons such as the Laser Carbine.

2) The weapon illustrates Geonee technological superiority, and their reputation for having reverse-engineered various Ancients artifacts and relics. The Geonee homeworld of Shiwonee is TL16, while the rest of the Imperium is at TL15 or lower.

3) The rarity and pricing of this weapon reflects Geonee culture, where a Geonee's personal identity and self-worth revolves around one's possessions, acquisitions and personal treasures. The dreenga is not so much a weapon as it is a status symbol.

4) The Geonee dreenga-smiths (technicians) will be loathe to replicate one of these weapons to give to an outsider (non-Geonee). The Geonee being a highly arrogant and chauvanistic people, the chances of them allowing an outsider to obtain/purchase one of these devices is between zero and nil.

5) Yes, this is the closest thing to a lightsaber I will allow in my campaign. Something as powerful as a full-sized Star Wars lightsaber would be far too unbalancing to the average CT campaign.

Awesome. Simply, awesome.

See...this is how cool this forum can be.

It's like the JTAS of old (not the crappy one SJG put out), full of neat, useful ideas for your Traveller game.

Rock on, Mal. Cool beans.

Thank you for the comments!

And one more Alien Weapon coming (posted in another thread).... the Hiver Portable Aegis, a Hiver point-defense weapon made by Hivers, for Hivers, used by Hivers, and giving the Hivers a safe way to run and flee with impunity!

first go at it...

Much coolness, BSvG.

Mucho cool.

Mal - Consider tweaking your description with a word or two about the plasma gas load. You address battery power and useful duration of the dagger. The weapon is also burnin up ejected plasma gas, so maybe plasma handle cartridges are available?

Also ... a starship will have many "plugs" for things like this to hook up and recharge (especially in the airlocks). But, siphoning plasma gas isn't going to be something that easily jacked into on a starship.

I'm thinking that either the replacement plasma gas is bought outright in replacement handle cartridges, or the enginneer has to rig a special feed from the J-Drive/Fuel Tanks.

A starship burns a lot of LHyd. The SOM tells us that a lot of this LHyd is used to cool things, vented with excess heat.

Maybe that trash LHyd can be used as a base to convert for plasma gas for the weapon (it's not like you'd need a lot - just enough to fill the tank in that tiny handle). The problem would be having access to the plasma gas from inside the ship.

The Cr35,000 recharging unit could be a type of converter: Waste LHyd in one side, through the converter/recharger that recharches the battery pack and refills the plasma handle tube.

The unit may come with instructions for the enginner to redirect a small amount of LHyd to the converter as a base for the weapon's plasma.

Just a thought.

Awesome pic, BSG! Blue plasma blade.... nice! It almost has a Geonee-Jedi feel to it, hehehe.

WJP, good ideas. Since the Geonee plasma dagger is based on an Ancients artifact, I like the idea of the LHyd converter/recharger unit along with the plasma handle tube. Since this is an Ancients relic, the "recharging" would not only use the best possible miniaturized fuel cell possible for TL16... but it would be fairly simple and uncomplicated. Remember that this is some kind of toy that Grandfather's contemporaries might have played with eons ago. So the potential for "high tech ease of use" recharger contraption might be present.

The Geonee adventurers who use this weapon would also need to be able to use this with practicality. Hence, the dagger must be able to use existing starship power sources for recharge. If the weapon could not be recharged in a practical manner, then the weapon is worthless in the hands of (Geonee) adventurers.

***Edit: I went ahead and updated the paragraph, and took to your idea regarding the converter/recharger. Thanks WJP.

Update regarding the recharging technique:

The dreenga is powered by compressed plasma gas contained in small rod-like tubes which are then inserted into the handle of the weapon. Each tube contains enough plasma energy to power the weapon for about one hour of active use. The weapon is complemented by a portable converter/recharger which can be plugged into starship power sources. GRR!! I had written a huge thing about this. Then it told me that I couldn't use paranethesis in links, and I had to use the back button, and it lost my post that took 10 minutes to write. So I'm going to repeat myself in short:

Warning: semi-hard science ahead

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma
(click on Plasma (Physics) since I can't direct link that here... stupid parenthesis in links)

Tokamak fusion reactors (the real ones we have today) produce lots of plasma. Plasma is highly ionized gas, not something you can capture/store. It is not always hot.

Arc welders are plasma arcs. Lightning is visible because of the plasma that is generated as the blast of energy travels to the ground.

You need a gaseous medium to generate plasma in. Solid matter can be converted to plasma, but that requires a lot of energy to first boil it to a gas. Whether it is converted to plasma after that depends on if what boiled it can ionize it, or if a second process can ionize it.

Theory: use a simple hydrogen/oxygen charge. Acts like an acetelyne torch, but a combination hydrogen/oxygen 'flame' - maybe not necessarily ignited (in which case you don't need the oxygen). Further hydrogen powers a fuel cell to energize this 'flame' into a much more excited state of matter - plasma. Providing it's own gas source means it will work in a vacuum.

Baron,

I'd like to use your illustration of the plasma dagger with your permission. I may end up compiling this into a JTAS-styled (Ship's Locker) article, then output to PDF. An illustration would be nice.

credit given, of course

That's worth mugging a Geonee merchant to get hold of. ;)

What gives the blade its shape/contains the plasma? A magnetic or gravitic field of some sort?

Either one or the other.

Since it's based on an Ancients relic (there are supposedly LOTS of Ancients sites found on Shiwonee alone), I'm not at liberty to explain the finer details of Ancients technology.

However, we do know (for game purposes) that the "blade" is in semi-solid plasma state (analogous to a lightning bolt perhaps), and is capable of slicing your arm off, perhaps even cutting through bone with little difficulty. At the very least, even a marginal hit from this weapon will result in severe burns.

And that the "dagger handle" is the device that allows that plasma to take the shape of a dagger-sized blade.
