Just a heads up here...
"Extraterrestrials: A field guide for Earthlings" is a book by Terence Dickinson and illustrator Adolf Schaller that I would recommend to anyone interested in creating realistic alien races.
It's mostly speculative pictures, but it does have a couple of nice sections about what alien sense organs may look like, what life on low gravity or high gravity worlds might be like, and even on really odd forms of life ("not as we know it").
Worth a look if you want something to kickstart the imagination - it's also pretty cheap, and good value.
