First Character

Thanos

SOC-12
Peer of the Realm
Here’s my 1st Character attempt to get a feel for char generation.

My goal was to be a navel officer. I rolled a 10, 7, 7, 4, 11, and 10. Knowing that I need a 6 to enlist and that Int gives a bonus to enlist I arranged things as follows: Str 7, Dex 10, End 7, Int 11, Edu 10, Soc 4.

For my basic skills I get 3 +1 for my Int score. I picked carouse, computer, drive, and engineer. These are all 0 level skills.

I rolled 2d6 for a whopping 4. That and my plus 1 for my Int score only gives me a 5. So no navy for me. I enter the draft and get Scouts.

I pick Courier as my specialty. For basic training I get: pilot (space craft), survival, mechanic, astrogation, comms, and gun combat. These are all level 0 skills.

I roll under the courier specialty for my first skill and get pilot so now I have pilot 1. I make my survival roll of 5. For life even I get betrayed. I next make my advancement roll and am now Scout 1 and get Vacc Suit 1. I also get a skill for advancing and roll on personal development at add +1 to my Dex raising it up to 11.

So ends my 1st 4 years in the Scouts.

Did I miss anything?

5 is survive. I assume you were referred to Life Event table 8 Betrayal. you need roll a d6 and choose randomly a Rival or Enemy.

Also instead of getting 4 pre-skills (which I think is kinda OK) you were supposed to pick a homeworld. Any CT with trade classifications would work and you'd get home world skills 1st, then flesh out to 4 from the list. EXAMPLE: Terra is Hi so Streetwise 0 is assigned to Terrans then they consult the list for remaining pre-career skills.

Ah. Yeah. I thought it was take from home world or education. So it's both. Gotcha. And yes, I rolled a 5 to survive and then rolled an 8 on the life event table.

Mongoose Char Gen can stink at times

???

In his first term the Scout gets Pilot-1, Vacc Suit-1, DEX +1 plus a ton of Level-0 skills; also he makes Rank 1 and a betrayal gives him a rival or enemy NPC for the Ref to use.

What's so stinky about that?

personally, i prefer the 'select skills' optional rule on page 40.

you have missed step 7b, to optionally establish a connection. you can get a skill for doing this, so it is worthwhile. in your case, you would be using the 'solo generation' rule.

Also, this is nitpicky... but I'm fairly certain you don't have to pick a Pilot cascade with a skill of 0. A 0 generally applies to all versions of the skill.
