Folding Spear

Blue Ghost

SOC-14 5K
Knight
For the "barbarian" who has everything, a spear with a folding shaft, allowing easier portability on starships (for those barbarians who leave their homeworld).

A spear always struck me as the medieval or classic era soldier's goto weapon, and more of a hand to hand thrusting deal than a projectile weapon.

But, an accurately thrown spear is something worth contemplating.

upgrade to an electro-stun spear. combination stun prod - emp weapon, and a "barbarian" already will know how to use it.

for added upgrade, make it grav-driven for throwing. nothing spectacular, can't "achieve orbit" or anything like that, but he'll be able to throw it several hundred yards. add targeting guidance and "recall" - return to point of origin - and you've got quite the combat tool.

I would prefer a good boar spear, so as to keep the big ones at a distance. The problem with a bill or halberd is that you need room to swing it.

It would be hard to say which weapon killed more people, the spear or the sword. When you read the Iliad, spears are as prominent as swords.

Edit Note: A good crossbow or two would not be a bad idea in the ship's locker either.

TL1 spear - 3 cr, any shmo can make one, usable anywhere without further support.

TL-3 folding spear - 25 cr, any TL3+ mechanic or metalworker can build or repair one, usable anywhere without further support.

TL-12+ Flykiller wonder-spear - 10kcr, requires high-tech electronics plant to make, requires elect-2+ & electronics repair kit (and replacement parts) to keep it working, requires a recharging station for the power-cell.

In a vacuum, the cutting weapon with reach is to be feared.

I don't know that I need to see those molecular cutting edges or vibroblades or any of other exotica, but I have to think a barbarian would appreciate a materials tech upgrade to his spear.

Especially if he can go home and parry then stick it to the Big Guy with a broadsword and plate armor.

yeah. but I'd still rather have a shotgun.

so, just little upgrades, not big ones? I dunno man, once you start the upgrade train it just keeps rollin' ....

Instead of folding why not telescoping like the Ranger staves from B5 or the High Guard sidearm from Andromeda.

What's the method of extension and of locking?

Take, for example, the Army's old GP Small... the poles weigh more than the canvas, despite being telescoping poles made of aluminum. They lock with a bolt through two tubes; the central pole needs 2 such joints. Rather durable, actually, but VERY slow to ready.

Or, the most commonly folded spear around, at least in the US and UK - national, regional, service, and Unit Colors & Guidons. Some use solid pole, but most use two-part poles. And many use a decorative spearpoint. The join is usually a screw-together join, but I've seen simple sleeve joins, and even a pinned saddle and tenon (two brass pins, through cut saddle).

Same for unit guidons.

And then, there's the spring advanced locking bolt over a pivot - exemplified by the SKS' bayonet.

And the thru-tensioned folding tube with narrowed ends, like my cane. One shake, and it transforms from a 0.3 x 0.1 x 0.02 bunder into a 1.1 m cane. Very strong on push, but a gentle pull opens a joint. It also has a telescope joint for one section to the handle, with a spring-pin through lock holes. It's a weak point...

Re: telescoping weapons, Aramis is right - you need a really good locking mechanism. I used an ASP telescoping baton in my job and pretty much any time you whacked someone or something with it the thing would start loosing and risk collapse. The long ones sometimes bent and the short ones were worthless for impact. The better version was made by a different company that had the sections lock inside so it wouldn't collapse unless you pushed the button on the bottom of the handle, well out of the way of something you'd accidentally push.

A folding spear is a great idea, actually. In the Lensman books they had boarding axes that even guys with atomic energy projectors melting whole layers of ships used in boarding actions. And as has been pointed out, a sharp instrument in vacuum is really all you need in the confines of a ship's corridors. Why else do Marine have cutlasses?

I would I would suggest taking it a bit further and make it also break down to three parts: two-part folding or telescoping (with a push button lock as above or otherwise), and the point be a Blade that can be used separately.

I think any barbarian (or Scout) would appreciate such an arrangement that provides a pole for whatever (including a less-lethal staff) and a Blade for anything else on his belt. A rack of such weapons folded up, along with some Snub Pistols and gas grenades by the main airlock would be handy. The folding spear can be used at either the short or long setting to keep the boarders at bay and bottled while the Snub Pistols and gas grenades take them out.

The spear that killed the Scorpion King in the movie ' The Mummy Returns' .
Looks like a carved golden stick until triggered.
