For the uninitiated: Who or What was the Covenant of Suffren?

If you've stumbled across any of my earlier posts you know that I am not conversant with all of the ins and outs of TNE or Traveller as a whole. I am, slowly but surely, piecing together a collection of books through Ebay and, if its something I don't need to hold in my hot little hand, Drivethrurpg. That said, I am dying to know who or what the Covenant of Suffren was. I'm also dying to know where they appeared in, so as to target that book if I see it at auction.

So what's the deal? I'm guessing they are a sentient chip race or chips and humans living together in harmony?

Pocket empire (human and uplifted dolphins and Orca) All data located in an introduction adventure found in the TNE Referee's screen. (Has a shoot first ask questions later policy regarding ships refusing to answer hails...)

It describes the fate of the Lady Elise and a quite good starting spot for new players to the TNE setting.
I launched my own campaign here.

It's also detailed a bit more in Issue 76 of Challenge Magazine. It's located right next to Navar, the world detailed in Idol Dreams one of the two "starter" adventures in the TNE core rules book.

Thanks all. From some of the other posts I've read I'm curious if they were especially adept at handling virus?

Also, who/what is Sandman and why is it a big deal that he/it has citizenship in the RC?

The Covenant of Sufren are pretty good at handling Virus due mostly to two things a) it's claimed that, unlike the RC or most other Pocket Empires they aren't re-emerging because they've never lost interstellar contact ie they've been around since 1129 or there abouts having formed from The Union of Sufren. This means they have a well trained all be it well used, (as in used up) fleet. and b) They developed "snake" which is a neutered, or tamed, virus with which they combat other virus. Alot of this, and answers to your Sandman questions, are detailed in Vampire Fleets. Which is a TNE book I highly recomend you get.

Vampire Fleets is totally on my 'grab as soon as I can' list. Sadly I haven't seen it in either deadtree or PDF form floating around anywhere. Thus I was hoping to tap into the deep well of traveller knowledge that is this forum.

So thanks for the info!

Odd. Vampire Fleets doesn't appear to be available on DTRPG. I'll ask 'em if it's going to be there soon.

As a sidenote you might want to enter 'Vampire Fleets' as a "favorite search" on ebay or similar sites. That way you'll be notified when one goes up for auction. It comes up fairly often on ebay and at about 1/2 to list price usually esp. if your auction-fu is good.

HTH as it is a good book to find. I wasn't too keen on some of the artwork but I have that problem with most GDW books of that era and the material is very good.

Yo. It certainly burnt my biscut when I realized that. The one book that I knew I wanted because of a review over at freelance traveller and it wasn't available. Strangely enough though, I didn't think to ask them... And I can forgive them given how many thousands of pages of Traveller they've already scanned in and converted to PDF.

On a seperate note, I would like to stress my appreaciation to you folks once again. This board seems geared towards the hardcore who keep the Traveller flame alive and, as such, I was more than a little worried that you might be less than friendly or helpful to a newbie.

Nice to see some new players "Aah Grasshopper" :)

As for sandman, he is a rare virus form that is actually sane and wants to co-operate with humans (and the other major races). He has realised that he and other peacemaker viruses will be trashed by the insane virus strain.

He runs the human resistance on promise, and eventually allies with the RC to stage an invasion to break the vampire highway. Eventually RC ships will carry a silicon crewman (a sandman clone inhabiting one of the ship's computers). The RC consitution is amended in early 1204 to grant citizinship to likeminded AIs (i.e. peacemakers)

Hope that Helps

Cheers

Bit of background, The Covenant (from the COS) is the binding document that details how the 3 main planets formed their little PE. It defines basic foriegn policy / virus policy statements.
