MGT Only: Free traders and the like

Adam Dray

For a scenario I'm running at Traveller Con, I need 4-6 different ships (MGT) that a group of recently-retired characters might find in a starship junkyard, waiting to be fixed up for a new career as free traders.

I'm happy to apply damage myself but I was hoping to find stats and deckplans for a handful of ships. I'm willing to buy PDFs (I can't remember if the rules allow you to post links to products; PM me?).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

You could go on DriveThru and search by "Christian Hollnbuchner". He puts out a number of ships in his "Starships Book" series for MgT.

"Moon Toad Publishing" also puts out a number of Ship Books for MgT. They are also on DriveThru.

You can adapt some other standard ships (aside from the Free/far/fat traders that are those in MGT main book).

See that a corsair or a yacht may make nice traders (lineers in case of the yacht).

Thanks, guys!

I made up a few of my own with different specs in the meantime, and I grabbed a few of the ones that y'all have recommended.

In the scenario I'm running, the group are a bunch of Navy buddies who just finished their last term, and have decided to buy a freighter of some kind and make a go at it. They get dropped off in some backwater subsector and find the nearest junkyard.

I'd like to present a half dozen or more options of busted-ass ships for them to comb over. Each ship will have slightly different specs and options, and also a lot of random damage. There's a reason these ships are in the junkyard!

Query: Is there already a published system somewhere that lets players inspect a ship to determine what's wrong with it?

I can cobble something together with Repair rolls, but I'm looking for something more interesting to play. The characters will be checking over a lot of ships, so it can't get too repetitive.

I'd also like to engage characters without Repair. I have added some additional "concerns" about some of these ships that Repair won't detect. Someone with Piloting might notice damaged streamlining. Only an Engineer will detect the broken j-drive. Someone with Art or maybe Carousing can determine that a ship is UGLY (-2 DM to seeking passengers).

I'm also making up new problems not on the damage list. Broken computers, outdated software, software viruses, damaged or fouled furniture in staterooms, etc.

I'm also using the Effect of the roll as a determinant of some of the more subtle problems. Effect=1 will detect the j-drive is broken, but Effect=2+ is required to detect that it can't be repaired without a B-class space station.

Part of the adventure will be about securing financing for this ship. They should have just enough ship shares to get the crappiest ship. They can probably secure a small bank loan for a middling ship. The better choices will require a loan that the banks aren't willing to underwrite, and they'll need to go to a loan shark (what could possibly go wrong?).

Anyway, I'd love pointers and ideas.

Here's my initial list of "Stuff that can go wrong with a ship, that someone with the right skill might detect."

  • Entertainment holo system down (Art/Holo)
  • Ship is ugly (Art/Sculpting or Art/Holo)
  • Navigation system broken (Astrogation)
  • Ship is unwelcome for passengers (Carouse)
  • Communication system is broken (Comms)
  • The ship lacks any kind of PA system or intercom system (Comms)
  • The ship's electrical interference prevents personal comms inside the ship from working (Comms)
  • Navigation system software is out of date (Computers)
  • Bridge software has a virus (Computers)
  • Ship has a smuggling compartment (Deception)
  • Ship has a j-drive disabler switch (Deception)
  • M-drive is poorly tuned (Eng/M-drive)
  • M-drive is jury-rigged (Eng/M-drive)
  • J-drive is poorly tuned (Eng/J-drive)
  • J-drive is jury-rigged (Eng/J-drive)
  • Electrical system is drawing power away from drives (Eng/Electronics)
  • Computer system is actually rated 1 higher than is stated (Eng/Electronics)
  • Life support system is putting out too much/too little oxygen under stress (Eng/Life Support)
  • Power Plant is a couple jumps away from a complete melt-down (Eng/Power)
  • Power Plant is overcharged, and will melt-down soon (Eng/Power)
  • Power Plant is actually underperforming (Eng/Power)
  • Entire ship is rigged to explode on a certain radio signal (Recon, Explosives)
  • Fuel tank is basically set up like a bomb, ready to go off when started (Explosives)
  • Streamlining (wings, fins, scoops) are bent (Flyer, Pilot)
  • Turrets need new bearings (Gunner/Turrets)
  • Turrets are fine, but use a very outdated type of weapon mounting (Gunner/Turrets)
  • There's a very hard-to-find fuel leak that could cause a ship explosion (Investigate)
  • The controller for the ship systems are fundamentally incompatible, but jury-rigged (Investigate)
  • All the ship controls are in a weird language (Language)
  • The ship is covered in a dangerous mold (Medic)
  • The navigation system cables are reversed, sending you in the opposite direction (Navigation)
  • I have a bad feeling about this ship (Pilot/Spacecraft)
  • The ergonomics of the bridge are terrible (Pilot/Spacecraft)
  • There's a terrible radiation leak in the j-drive (Phy Sci/Physics, or Life Sci/Biology)
  • The fuel scoops are corroded from dipping into unusual atmospheres (Phy Sci/Chemistry)
  • The artificial gravity unit fluctuates (Phy Sci/Physics or /Electronics)
  • There's an unusual alien life form living in the hold/ducts/power plant (Space Sci/Xenology)
  • The sensors have a blind spot (Sensors)
  • The sensors give false positives (Sensors)
  • The luxury areas onboard are so outdated, they give a negative, rather than positive, DM (Steward)
  • The staterooms are in an unacceptable state (Steward)
  • There's actually no appliances for feeding people/doing laundry (Steward)
  • The ship has another name and a bad history (Streetwise)
  • The ship was stolen from a powerful Duke (Streetwise)
  • The hold has special (rare) fasteners or containers for special merchandise (Trade)
  • There's no airlock (Vacc Suit)
  • The airlock is missing a window/door (Vacc Suit)

Oh, to be clearer about what I want for ships:

  • 100-400 tons
  • generally freighter types (but open to other things)
  • jump-capable
