Future of T20 with the advent of D&D 4e?

Turanil

SOC-9
So WotC has announced their new version of D&D: 4dventure. With this, they say they are going to revoke their d20 license. How is this going to affect Traveller20? Will T20 be simply abandoned? Will the T20 rules be updated into some "OGL" (d20 based but not named "d20") game? Or will it be kept as it is with no concern for what WotC does?

There are changes pending for the T20 rules, but not due to D&D4e. I'll be making an annoucement in a few days about this.

Heh there are enough clues around as to what is going to happen if you look closely ;)

<biting tongue>

Hunter, you're an evil man...

Teasing them that way...

[peeks out from behind his curtain] If you only knew....Oh so delicious...

My guess...

Ah, well, my guess is that T20 will be going the way of the dodo and the only rules set that will be supported is T5 or whatever system Mongoose is going to create. I suppose QLI will get a license to produce T5 product from Mongoose and begin to produce material with that in mind. An interesting development all the way around. Hmmm.....

I wonder how Mongoose T5 is going to effect the GURPS Traveller license.

It has been said (by Mongoose and Hunter) that the GT license is renewable as a noted exception.

Real effects? GT has run a pretty steady course, but I've repeatedly heard that future GT materials will be electronic only since before the announcement. THerefore, I expect that Mongoose's Traveller edition (which isn't T5, per se, but T5 light at most compliant, or possibly a related but notably different ruleset) will be the only one in stores.

That would be an incorrect guess ;)

As Aramis noted, it doesn't.

Now Hunter, what you are suppose to do is to SET NIGHTSHADE STRAIGHT by offering counter arguments and anticipated information. Instead, you continue to tease.... you are very cruel! ;)

Damn! Just as I was getting ready to purchase T20 (I finally have a PayPal account and some cash to spare), D&D 4E and MongT come through and eclipse it... How many people would be using T20 material in the aftermath of 4E/MongT? Would any material for this system find an audience (I'm talking fan material of my usual type :))?

Although I will prolly buy T5 and RTT I will stick to playing T20 and SciFi20 when it comes out.

SciFi20 will be a continuation (Sort of) T20 when the Traveller licence expires.

As to what you should buy, it comes down to what you like to play. T5 and RTT will be an evolution of the classic traveller system. T20 is based on the D20 system, but is modified somewhat. D20 has some fans and some haters. Personally I like the D20 system much more than CT mechanics. So that is the one I use. Basically stick with the system you like.

Sounds to me like SciFi20 is a response to the Mongoose move - something which can be used to run existing T20 material without infringing on the new licensing agreement.

Two questions:

1. Once the new agreement takes hold (i.e. when the current T20 licensing agreement has has run its course), will 'old' T20 material still be available as PDF products? That is, would it still be legal to sell PDFs of existing T20 material?

2. Would it be possible to produce Traveller material (say, under the Mongoose license), but include SciFi20 stats as well (i.e. to make it roughly compatible with T20)?

Wizards did not end the OGL with 4e. For me, what is killing T20 is the fact that I cannot stock it on our game store shelves. I could easily move 6 copies in the first month, and at least 20 copies a year.
