general post

hi Guys!

I am probably going to ramble here for a sec so forgive me.

I'm almost a 40 year old, traveller rpg EMATIATED man who has no outlet for role playing.

i've been buying up classic traveller lbbs off ebay for the last six months.

I had the classic lbbs when i was 16-18 and loved them. Played a bit.

Now i'm a grown up married man who thinks gaming is for kids, but i MISS...DEEPLY MISS...the comraderie, adventure, and down right powerful adrenaline fun of playing CT.

I don't know what i'm trying to accomplish by posting this other than to simply express my thoughts.

I wish I could turn back time and be a late teen who'd spend 'til all hours of the night (and morning!) playing CT with friends.

I've stopped by a few adventure stores/comic stores in my area thinking i might be able to find a new group of friends to perhaps join up with in playing. Now it's all Yu-gi-oh and Magic The Gathering, or Warhammer 40k. And worst of all, they're all KIDS!

Oh damn...writing this made me practically realize why i was thinking of posting this in the first place: I'm an OLD FART!

I'm not young anymore! I woke up one day, missing my CT and LBBs, want desperately to play and enjoy the time spent with others in adventuring through Interstellar space and I find i'm old!

I've also been trying to get my 'fill' through reading Honor Harrington, Heinlein, or Louis McMaster Bold works, but in a way ...while they are incredible works...they don't fill that 'vacancy' or 'void' in my soul for playing classic traveller for REAL!

So perhaps I will wind this post down by asking any one out there for advice:

I've noticed lately that there is this concept of PBEM for playing traveller by email.

I would absolutely DIE to be a party to this. Can any one point me to a 'live' one that might entertain a 'newbie'?

It's like this: I have the CT LBB 'shakes' and I need my 'fix!'

Maybe...for all I know...i'm just like you guys...older, mature...played CT when we were kids. But what are you doing now? i mean...frankly I'm ...uh...out of sorts...even WALKING INTO some of these RPG stores now.

Like..."Hey...what's that old fart doing in here...probably buying something for his kids!"

Well, that's all i had to say. I guess i'm just a mid-life crisis CT-starved old fart who has no outlet for getting his 'fix'.

Not sure if you guys can relate, or if i'll be flamed for making this type of a post.

Warmest wishes guys!

Hi bubbawny! Welcome back, from one old fart to another (and we are far from the minority on this board ;) ).

The only flames here are the ones at the virtual fire to warm the spirit if not the body so no worries there.

Prowl around and by all means if you haven't seen it yet check out the Recruiting Office section. Post your locale or interest in joining a PBEM there and see if that works. If not just keep checking now and again, new PBEM pop up now and again.

There are also two online chat games of Traveller that I know of. In the Recruiting boards look for Endeavor and Ursula. Endeavor is on Saturday night. A chat game gives you some of that face to face gaming thrill you seek without even leaving the house. (And nobody can tell how old you are. )

Welcome to the boards!

If ye wanna try to find a group in yer area, go down to the "Recruiting Station" section of this board and look through it, or post. If yer in the Boston, MA area I know of a monthly group...

You are younger than I am. Perhaps there is a diffeent store in your area? I know that around hee, there are a couple of stores that I do not bother with, because they are all M:tG ro Warhammer. On the other hand, I also have a couple of stores nearby that are a lot more geezer-friendly, as it were.

Not too much longer now, and I'll be teaching my son to play RPG's. :D

Welcome to the boards! I'm only 53 myself. You know the alternative to gettin' old ain't worth a damn, so keep gettin' old, my friend.

BUT I also would like to know more about running or playing in a PBEM campaign, I think I have players willing to try it, but I have no idea of how to run the campaign so offer some answers guys, tell these geezers how to do it! Okay?

Hi bubbawny! Welcome aboard.

You're younger than me (by four years), so don't feel so bad. In fact, in my regular face-to-face gaming group of five people, the youngest is 40.

I'm one of those people who play in a PBEM Traveller game. We aren't currently looking for new players -- in fact, we have a waiting list of people who want to join -- but if you want to observe to see how it is done, just go to Yahoo groups and join Travellogue2. Also, in my signature below you will find a link to a story hour I am compiling of the adventures in the PBEM game.

As for game stores, yes many of them are often filled with kids these days. But many also offer regularly scheduled days when RPGs are played, so you might be able to find a game that way. Some stores will even sponsor game days periodically, with the intention of people coming to learn how to play new games, or at least games different from the ones they usually play. Last month, I ran just such a game, for T20 Traveller. I will provide you with a link to a messageboard whose members frequently sponsor and participate in game days all across the U.S. These might be a way to find a game in your area. The game days I've been to, there are always older players like yourself (and myself) who are looking for other older players to game with. Here's the link: EN World

Good luck, good hunting, and keep your sensors active for other Travellers.

I just signed up to the Yahoo Group

Trying to catch up on the past story log now...

thanks for making me aware of it!

I live in Buffalo, NY.

Is anyone aware of a good gaming store in the area? Anything nearby?

I wrote and submitted a CotI article intended to be a PBEM primer for players and referees. Martin has accepted the article but has said that he doesn't know when it'll actually get published. If you or anyone else would like to see the article published, please nudge Martin (MJD) for me. :D
