I used to play the original Traveller RPG back in the early 80s and now I am looking to get back into gaming. How good is the D20 system and is there a lot of material available for it?
I like it. Many don't. If you like D20 games other than this you probably will. Not much directly available, but MANY D20 sources to pull tech and creatures from with minor editing (the T20 book has tips on conversions) look for my software on here for help with encounter table generation.

Personally I like the T20 (D20) system. However I think the main book is out of print, although I'm sure you can get something off ebay. There was a lot of stuff availble for it.
I don't think converting stuff from other versions of the game would be that hard.
Yes, unfortunately the D20 Traveller (aka T20) is out of license and out of print. There might be a few copies available of the printed materials (main rule book and a couple or so supplements). Have a google, ebay and a few stores have had them for sale, even my not-so-local store had one or two collecting dust a while back.
There were several good supplements that were pdf only as well and those are no longer available.
I think I heard rumours of the whole of T20 being produced as a collection of pdfs on cd-rom by Marc Miller through his FarFuture.net site, but I'm not sure and it doesn't seem to be on the "coming soon" list. As a player of the original you should check out Marc's site and his cd-rom pdf collections. Great value to get all that golden goodness you may be missing. The scanned material is generally good but not perfect though the worst bits get corrected and posted for download.
Is/was T20 good? I think so.
There are a few bugs to iron out but nothing big (as I recall). If you get a copy of T20 this site has a lot of discussion on those bugs and asking any questions here will likely get quick help.
There were some complaints that the D20 style of feats and levels etc. made it "un-Traveller" which I didn't really find true myself. it is an excellent (imo) adaptation of the Classic Traveller prior career history to D20 mechanics.
The current edition of Traveller is published by Mongoose, and you're better off buying that if you want to get back into the game. There is a lot of Mongoose Traveller material available and material is still being released too. See http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/home/series.php?qsSeries=51 for what's out there.
IMO T20 was not very good, and should be avoided. It was more like an attempt to bash a round peg (Traveller) into a square hole (d20 system), it didn't work well as a result, and it didn't get much support.
I have to echo what far-trader said about prior history. it was the best feature of T20 IMHO.
I will respectfully disagree with fusor. If you know and like D20 games, T20 is a great way to get some Traveller goodness in your gaming. If you are totally new to either system, then going with mongoose is good advice.
