GURPS To High Guard?

Such would be very interesting, indeed. Combine a GURPS=>HG conversion with the free download 101 Starships by BITS, and you've got a whole slew of ships just waiting for your players.

HG ships work reasonably well in T20, so there's a world of applications here.

So let me throw my vote in on this.... so, can anyone help us out here?

I've discussed it in principle with Rob Prior, the author of 101 Starships, but at this time I'm not pursuing it actively because it's mean using all those American unit thingies which hurt my head.

My attempt, to put it mildly, was not crowned with success. My first mistake was in trying to convert the Gazelle class close escort to gurps traveller. The first problem I encoutered was that there are no particle accelerator barbets in the gurps traveller design sequence..another problem was that Highguard uses displacemnt tons, while Gurps traveller uses mass in fact you need to know the mass of all the ship's components ,for thrust to weight calculations later in the gurps traveler design sequence. In short I guess the root cause of my failure was in chosing the wrong ship to convert. the Gazelle dosn't exist in Gurps traveller, You can't build one....

You can if you start from the TNE version of the Gazelle, it doesn't have PAW barbettes either ;)
Another option would be to get hold of GURPS Traveller Starships, firstly because there are PA heavy turrets, and secondly there is a write up of the Gazelle on page 97

Hello soloprobe,

GURPS:Traveller (GT) uses the GURPS:Vehicles (VE2) to design everything from weapons to starships. VE2 uses volume, the same as in High Guard and all Traveller variants, to design components. The basic unit used in VE2 is 500 cubic feet, or 1 dton, which is equal to approximately 14.16 cubic meters.

GT is similar to CT: Book 2: Starships, but is even more limited in some respects. GT:Starships, which has recently been published, is similar to CT: Book 5: High Guard, but still has limitations. To fill the gaps VE2 can be used to create items that are not covered in either GT or GT:Starships.

As mentioned in, drat I forgot the other person's name, another post here GT:Starships has a Gazelle as part of the vessel information files, which can be found on p. 97 column 2.

Thanks, guys I'll start looking though My copy of gt: Starships. And now I realize that Mark Seifert was looking for a way to convert GT ships to Highguard, so that they can be used in power projection...It should sound easier than converting Highguard to gurps traveller

Evening soloprobe,

You are welcome for whatever information that I can provide. I hope that what inofrmation I provide is not out to lunch. The major hurtle to overcome in the difference in the units of measure used in GT and the other Traveller variants.

GURPS Starships isn't so bad once you get your head around 500cuft is 1dt ;) (I no longer notice the cuft, just use the dt "spaces") and the masses are almost 1000kg or 1 metric ton (for accuracy you could multiply the mass of your final design by 0.8 to get the mass in metric tons).
The one thing that does cause me some confusion is the way they do their power plants

Most of my shipbuilding at the moment is T20 with bits from GT-S for flavour, and with one eye on how they translate into power projection.

You know what surprises me most about this topic?

Why didn't anyone just say "To hell with converting things one for one per se - and just use spaces = dtons.

A stateroom still costs 4 dtons of volume. You can now include things like pools, exercise gyms, galleries, battlesuit morgues, etc direct from GURPS into HIGH GUARD. It will make some of the ships created this way seem less capable than ships built from the HG days, but then again, you're donating space for a galley, gym, morgue, etc that wasn't available for HG. Best of all? You dnn't really have to convert between either of GURPS TRAVELLER for any other traveller for that matter - just use the extra "systems" as if they had been designed for HG from the start.

Maybe because GT Spaces include fractions of the powerplant needed to power themselves?

Point is? High Guard never really concerned itself with power costs on anything except weapon systems and screens (and agility I guess). Why worry about it with the GURPS based systems? Just place the modules in as if they were High Guard modules and ignore the issues of power. An energy point in High Guard is more than any of the GURPS systems use for non-weapon systems...
