Headwear

Ever notice the changing fashions of headwear that always seem to enter into Traveller?

Consider this...

When Traveller came out, it was only the working class stiffs that wore baseball caps. Now it seems part of a uniform.

Marines used to be defined as having rounded helms, then with the Spinward Campaigns they suddenly aquired the teardrop helmet.

Zhos used to wear turbain. Now any type of headwear from Central Asia seems sufficient.

What is the story behind the hats? I like to wear hats, but usually not baseball hats? Is this a case of art reflecting (American) life?

Okay, I don't know about the role of headwear in Traveller, but as far as the utility of the baseball cap goes, I see it like this:
Baseball caps are cheap and easy to make, using a minimum amount of material. They are mostly one-size-fits-all or minimally adjustable. They do an acceptable job of protecting the eyes from glare and foreign objects (rain, branches, wind-blown grit). They can be worn in most environments without becoming a hindrance, and quickly and easily stored when necessary. They provide space for advertising or placement of a logo without requiring additional reinforcement. They give the hands something to do when called before a superior officer for 'remedial counseling.' They can be used as a field-expedient coffee filter. They can be used as a field-expedient vehicle air filter (for a limited amount of time). Their uses are many and varied.

The baseball cap and the khepi (with or without flaps) are two favorites for military dungaree-equivalent uniforms world-wide.

In addition to all the other reasons listed, they can easily be modified to fit a variety of head shapes with minimal distrurbance of their form-factor.
