HiYa!

Just sticking my head in and saying "hello" :)

It's been a long time since I last played traveller, just over 20 years
to be precise, but have managed to talk my young brother-in-laws
into a few adventures. They're looking forward to trying something
different to D&D, so I've been planning a few easy adventures
based on my "classic" traveller books - hopefully they'll enjoy it ;)

I'm also in the middle (really the beginning...) of a 3d game idea
based around the traveller rule-set. It will probably never see
the light of day (visions of grandeur, I'm afraid), but I keep on
plodding on in the hope of one day being able to travel through
a virtual traveller universe, even if it's just me that ever sees it :)

Welcome from another old timer!

If your group is familiar with D&D, you might consider T-20. To plug QLI, the book is very good and allows people familiar with D&D to play Traveller quickly. The FEEL is right for Traveller and the mechanic is close enough to D20 that kids can jump over easily.

My son and his friends were D&D slaves. I got T20 and ran a quick little game for them and they loved it. I even got one of the dads, a die-hard GURPS fan, to have a go at it. We only played a couple of times, but the system translated very smoothly and I got to work everything in the old Traveller that I had loved from days gone by.

Not everyone who plays D&D plays the WOTC D20 system. Just like not everyone plays T20. A transition from TSR D&D will not be nearly as smooth as you imply.

D20? Bah!

And no, just because someone who wants to silence dissenting opinions told me "it is passe to dislike D20, so get over it" the last time I said it doesn't mean I'll "keep quiet like a good boy".

I like Hunter, and hope he has even more success with T20, but I strongly doubt I'll ever buy any of it. Maybe I'll miss something nice, but that's just the way it is.

And yes, I play D&D (the original 1974 books) & AD&D... a mix of 1st & 2nd editions (more recently than for 15 years or so)... and no D20 stuff for that, either.

I guess I'm just a "dinosaur"... I still play the versions of games I started with.

Quite True, and while I still have my old AD&D books, my son has never opened them. D&D 3.5 is all he knows. THAT transition to T20 went very easily.

Well just now I'm sticking to my old battered classic traveller books (1981),
I'm a bit rusty so I'll probably be asking a few questions on my
travels ;)

Stick with the Classics, I say! My son started with the LBBs (little black books) last year, and now he's hooked. I still use some T20 and GURPS as background material, though; they are excellent resources and should not be overlooked.

Welcome to CotI, Graham!

To each thier own. I play several game systems and I have my likes and dislikes as well. What someone else likes or dislikes doesn't bother me as long as get my rent paid every other Friday. Let's just all agree that we disagree. Group hug?
