Currently 1920 x 1080.

If doable I'd suggest a couple or few common sizes. Maybe (without being specific) a small and large regular screen and a large wide screen.

well, atm (since i'm sorta deployed) my "desktop" is my trusty little Dell D420...
so my desktop display size is 1280x800.

at "home"(whenever I get back there)? using a Samsung T240HD as my monitor, so anything in a 16:9 aspect ration.

I'd say "as high resolution as you can reasonably manage, with aspect ratios of 4:3, 16:9, and 16:10". You can almost always tell the computer to shrink-to-fit, and dropping pixels usually leaves you with a better appearance than trying to interpolate pixels does.

Currently I have two aging laptops (both 1920x1200) and a notebook (1024x600). Once I have a proper job again I'll be looking to buy a new desktop ... probably with dual widescreen monitors.

Eventually I'll have to get matching screens, but the size/resolution difference doesn't bother me (I use 1 screen for email, IM, the big one for what I'm working on, which, depending on how many windows it opens up, may span the other screen). And when I worked from home I used 2 PCs so had 4 screens, and still there is not enough screen space!
