General How do you handle the difference between Training and Practice?

Do you treat Training and Practice differently?

An example:
Practicing basketball - being on the court by yourself shooting hoops.
Training for basketball - having a Coach watching you shooting hoops and telling your how to do it better.

And how does each affect advancing skills? Or is there really much of a difference?

Yes.
personal training and practice requires the dedication throw.

Hiring a personal trainer (or buying a holographic/robot/AR/VR) can grant you a bonus to your dedication roll.

Hiring a full time personal instructor or entering a training program (again it may be holgraphic/robot/AR/VR)
allows for the instruction skill to come into play.

PCs or NPCs (including holographic/robot/AR/VR) with instructional expertise are capable of training individuals or small groups. An instructor must have at least Instruction-1 to conduct any training.
In addition to general training functions, personal instructors impart knowledge of certain well-understood skills to other characters, they may impart skills to others up to a level of one less than their instructional skill and one less than their own skill level in the skill being taught. Thus, an instructor with Instruction-4, Recon-5 and Demolitions-2 could teach another character Recon-3 and Demolitions-1.
Each level of each skill taught requires six weeks of instruction during which the referee should severely curtail both characters' activities (no adventuring), or a six month course with other activities somewhat less curtailed (eg weekend/evening classes, jump week)
At the conclusion of the course, the learner must roll 9+ on two dice to achieve the skill, with a DM of +1 for lntel 8+ and +2 for
lntel 10+.

CT instruction mechanic and self study for 4 year term works for me.

In addition CT has the sabbatical, 4 year Cr70000 resulting in Skill-2, and correspondence course style improvement in the education stat.

The various 1 year training schools and 4 year universities and academies from LBB4+ work IMO as a combo of the education stat mechanic and several instruction sessions. Note on average it will often take more then one instruction session for a skill to stick.

In addition I have an opposite development to the above, the Eureka skill roll.

When a player rolls a natural 2 or 12, I give them the option of a Eureka roll- a sudden flash of inspiration in their worst or finest moment of execution that elevates their understanding- or take the wrong lesson or be scared off, losing skill.

If they take it, they roll 2d6- on a 12 they gain +1 skill in whatever they were using at the time of the natural high/low skill. If they roll a 2, they suffer a -1 skill hit.

I wouldn't even count the shooting hoops alone as practice for anything other than free throws...
... as it is almost completely unlike actual play of basketball.

Generally, I'm pretty stingy about practice, and pretty easy about training - training requiring a program of instruction either by a live or recorded trainer, and a specific set of challenges appropriate to current abilities...

I watched Kobe Bryant shoot a bunch of three pointers from a spot where he had missed one in game the previous night. I remember thinking, is he practicing or punishing or both?
