From the street I suspect. I've heard of that happening, never to someone I knew though.
They also (used to anyway) go for manhole covers (watch your step and drive), streetlight poles (the big steel ones), and just about anything else made of metal they could sell to crooked scrap metal dealers. I say crooked (or in it themselves) because how do you not go "Gee, where do these guys get brand new light poles, miles of wires, and all these manhole covers?" if it's not by stealing them off the street? Where's all the CCTV cameras I keep hearing you have when something like this goes down

It is shocking that the scrap metal dealers buy this stuff.
Oregon has introduced some laws that may help, of course if there are crooked scrap dealers, or ones that just can't be bothered, the thefts and sales will continue.
What really sucks about this is the thousands of dollars damage done to earn the crooks a few bucks. Well, that and the screwing with infrastructure.
Glad you're back online Andrew, and hope your neighbors are back online soon also. How long were you down and out?

OK. I come from Doncaster, same county, a few miles down the road. Now nothing like that ever happened there ... except for the brand new super-dooper council houses that were being built for the locals, and local thieves sneaked in half-way through the build and ripped out all the boilers and central heating before they were finished. A section of our office had a lead roof replaced and the very next day, the entire roof was removed and hauled away by thieves. It was replaced again and so far its stayed there.
