Joybuzzers - another toy for players

Here's yet another toy to amuse or annoy your players with:

Buzzknucks TL-8 Price: 200Cr

Also known as “joybuzzers” these are insulated, padded gloves with electric contacts on the knuckles and palms. The contacts are wired to fast discharge batteries in the adjustable cuffs; providing enough power for 3 discharges.

The wearer uses the “Hands” vs. Jack table for melee combat against “soft” armors, and the target must roll End (or less) vs. 3D6 to avoid losing consciousness for 2 rounds. The second hit adds one 1D6 to the saving roll; the third hit adds another for a total of 5D6 vs. END (or less). This cumulative effect is only applied when hitting the same target. The gloves cannot penetrate hard armor, like combat or battle dress, but treat all others as Jack.

A favorite of organleggers and muggers, these are also standard issue to most police forces, and often useful to covert operatives.

sabredog, I would find it useful if you posted the game system this is intended for since not all systems produce characters with characteristics in the same range.

Thanks

It's for Classic Traveller. I think I confused the issue by my clumsy "hands vs. Jack" line? Or is it the saving throw to avoid the immediate stun effect?

Yes, those.

How are the Joybuzzers turned on and off?

Crook takes a little, gray haired, old lady's pocket book and a police officer uses his gloves to subdue the crook. The officer returns the bag and helps the old woman get into her grav vehicle and forgets his gloves are powered up.

I would think they would be bulky and maybe not very flexible since the wearer is in direct contact with the target and needs to be insulated from the discharge. What happens if they are grappling and uninsulated parts of their bodies are in contact?

If you would be willing to have these appear in Freelance Traveller, please drop me a note by email (editor@freelancetraveller.com) with explicit permission and a real name to credit them to.

A) They are turned on and off when you flip the switch after you put them on. Consider the button for this to be conveniently next to the batteries in thier pouch on the cuff.

B) If you forgot to turn your 'knucks off before accidentally zapping the old lady you'd likely be a pretty dumb cop. That'd be like waving around my TASER with my finger on trigger- all while I'm talking to someone who called in a complaint. It's just asking for trouble. It might happen sometimes, mainly to player characters if you want to hold them accountable to that sort of minutia, but I don't. I figure they know how to use the weapons they have and find that sort of thing tedious.

C) They gloves are insulated, naturally, but they don't have to be thick and bulky about it, unless maybe they are homemade, like the average mugger might use...but then if a player were to use a pair like that it'd create all sorts of amusement for the referee, wouldn't it? I've been tased and been holding others up who have been tased in training and you don't have to be wearing rubber gloves to insulate yourself from someone getting tased.

Buzzknucks make a faster discharge than a TASER does - they don't cycle for 5-10 seconds - it's just a fast ZAP! and the batteries discharge right away. Smack the person and ZAP. Slight stink of ozone and they are down. That fast, directed through the small contacts with insulation behind them and you are protected.

I'll flesh out what I wrote a little to clear things up...I think I assumed too much on the reader. More detail is always good.
