Judges Guild

jrients

SOC-11
Back when I was first getting into Traveller around '99 or '00 a friend and longtime Trav fanatic warned me off purchasing a large lot of Judges Guild products. The lot consisted of one or two of their adventure modules and two or three of the sector books. I know the JG material has been de-canonized and that T20 products now covers the same part of Charted Space. What was the problem with the JG stuff? My friend thought it was sub-par but really never gave me any details. I still occasionally search eBay for Judges Guild material for D&D and when I see the Traveller sector books and adventures I can't help but wonder what's inside.

It was created in the early days of RPGs, and was printed on fairly low grad paper it seemed. In addition to that, most of their Traveller stuff didn't seem terribly imaginative or to fit the OTU particularly well. On the other hand, most of it is pretty inexpensive now (I've seen some of the JG stuff on eBay for US$0.50 sometimes). You might consider getting one and seeing if you like it.

I'd agree that most of the JG publications were a little lack lustre, didn't stop me buying them then or now, however two I would recommend are the 'Traveller Logbook' for the random background generation tables which were always useful for NPC's and PC's looking for inspiration and the 'Doom of the Singing Star' had a large set of plans for a space liner, and although the paper quality was poor and the scenarios not very imaginative we managed several different scenarios of our own making around the plans including a Striker mini-campaign based on the original premise in the book.

I'd certainly recommend picking them up if you're not too worried about cannon and just looking for plans and ideas, they also generally make printer friendly pdf's, being largely black and white. (And no, I have no connections to JG!!!)

I'm a fan of Starships & Spacecraft, but that one has apparently been rare for a lot longer than the others...
