Jump Limits

deadlock

SOC-13
Greetings and salutations,

A friend and I were discussing the different settings of Traveller and started wondering, is there any reason why starships are limited to a maximum of jump-6?

Hehehe…
Because no ship equipped with a “jump-7” drive ever returned from its test flight.

There has been much discussion on this topic. Many explanations exist but I think it is to keep the Imperium big. Keeps even the fastest ship “slow” in comparison to the scope of the OTU.

Well, there's a whole lot of 1-6 going on in LBB123. Jump 6 and 6G limits are probably there for the same reason that there are 6 basic character backgrounds...

Or were you looking for an in-game answer?

IMTU, "they" haven't figured out how to control a jump-7+ yet: it's theoretically possible, but it's only happened by accident. The Festrian Imperial Scout Service has been assigned the unenviable task of figuring out how to control a misjump, no doubt contributing to the horrific survival rate for scouts...

"No, really. You kick in the drive at TEN anna HALF diameters. Yep. Works like a charm. Wait, you wanna go somewhere *in particular?*"

I was working on a Jump Multimplexor that lets you multiply your Jump Factor by a certain amount (no more than by 6, of course). Based on an Ancient Artifact, natch. Uses power straight from the power plant - might leave you stranded, tho. At least until I introduce the Quantum Source Reactor. Gives some serious Jump Sickness until I introduce the Jump Governor which encloses the ship in a gravity envelope (much like a fusion reactor envolpes the reaction) and the travel time is reduced by a factor of 60 (making travel time equal to the speed of my JumpComm).

But then, I'm altering canon, IMTU.

Pray I don't alter it any further...

JUMP 6+?

Not allowed by scientific calculations known to man at the time of the OTU.

IMTU only those who find the ancient ship "Death Stalker" and figure out how to make it operable willl ever be able to have more than Jump 6.

What is the Jump capability of the Death Stalker?
Good question.
Have you any more good questions you would like to ask?
(Like, How big is the universe?)

Well, I have plans for developing a domain out in the middle of nowhere. The players will start out in the OTU until the unfortunate misjump. Or the unfortunate discovery of that stargate in jumpspace.

I can see the group's engineer campaigning to develop a J7 engine. I'll let him and when he goes to test it...

"Why am I naked?"
"Part of the deal for the J7 engine." Finishes coffee. "Now turn around and grab your ankles. It's time to make a payment."
