Woo-hoo!

Just got my copy of QLI's reprint.

I can't remember the last time I was so excited about a game purchase.

I agree.

It's a nice format for CT.

And a good idea for future editions/versions of the game ;)

First Thoughts:

"Man, look at the cool forms..."

"I wonder what it says about Patrons..."

"Say... lottery... what? What are the odds of surviving in the Low Berth?! Good grief!"

The only problem I really have with the reprint is it's just a "teeny" bit short, making some of the pages a little hard to read near the spine. This comes from the reprint being designed for the Grip Traveller edition software box according to Hunter. It doesn't seem to hold up as well as the original LBBs or similar books of that size/format (say BESM or Palladium books), likely due to not being laminated, and the cover's a tad thin. Granted I take my copy with me to waiting rooms, throw it in the car and backpack, etc..

The Book 1-3 reprint's a good deal. This comes from a person who's not that particular to CT or to new LBBs these days.

Made my first CT character last night.

I pulled 7 straight terms in the Merchants. I got lucky in getting promoted and quickly made it to the second highest rank, but missed becoming captain three times in a row after that. (I really wanted a ship!)

I picked up Medic-3, Navigation-2, something else at 2, and a half dozen other skills at one.

I picked up some Intelligence when I retired, but lost 2 strength and 2 endurance to aging. Ouch!

Characters just seem to take on a life of their own. If I had to choose wealth, status, and rank on my own for each character, I doubt I could get it "right." In CT, the system gets it right for me. There's a lot of subtle information implied by it. Even more interesting is that there's a very definite personality implied by the history and stats you end up with at the end.

I like this sort of system a lot.

I find MegaTrav's system with Brownie points and the more detailed resolution of careers (a la Merchant Princes, High Gaurd, Scouts and Mercenary) adds even more. The BPs let you fudge a few 'or die' kind of rolls, get that extra special assignment to Sanitation School you always wanted, or whatever. They aren't really overpowering if you aren't 'medal cycling'.

And having college, military academy, naval academy, flight school, and merchant academy to enlist in is neat. The year by year determination of your activity also adds a lot to character history.

And of course, you can try for illegal anagathics to avoid the aging effects... at a risk... (and loss of cash).

This is part of what I *love* about Traveller - building a competent character at the BEGINNING of the game. One who has a history implied by his generation.

You might try the reprints of Books 4-7 and their more detailed systems. They're pretty good, though IMO not quite as good as MT.

OTOH, you should look for MTCG program
http://web.tampabay.rr.com/gsvenson/mtcg.html

It generates MT characters and also supports some extra things like Imperial Academy, some oddball careers, psionics, etc.

Have fun. The game really is quite a bit of fun and the metagame of building a character and explaining his background isn't by any means any less fun! (Or not much less anyway!)

I used to prefer Megatraveller's character creation rules too. However, I recently got sick for any extra complexity in my games. As such, I really appreciate the basic generation system. It's solid it does the job and doesn't take long. I am currently running a game with the D&D Rules Cyclopedia, but I already told my players that we are moving to SF game using the Traveller Book alone next year.
