Just what is 2300 AD?

As the title says, what is 2300 AD and how does it relate to the Traveller universe?

After reading the linkworlds cluster mini campaign, I ordered the classic traveller main book. After searching for some more info on Traveller I stumbled on 2300 AD, but I can't find much information on its setting.

As for the rules, I plan to do some conversions to the new Savage Worlds system from Pinnacle.

It uses a d10 derivative of the DGP task system for CT, but that's about the only link...

2300AD (aka Traveller 2300) is an outgrowth of the game Twilight 2000. The designers traced the future history of Earth following WWIII and the process of rebuilding.

The game does not overlap into the OTU.

The universe is a much more "hard" science fiction setting than the Traveller Universe. The maps for example extended both horizonally and vertically.

The basic setting was a balkanised earth with colonies extending through 3 travel routes. Space flight was limited to J2 vessels.

There were a number of interesting alien races - none of which overlapped the OTU aliens.

Having created a universe and got people playing, being GDW they added a war - this time with a previously unknown militaristic alien race - the Kaffers.

Biggest problems with the game were as follows:

1. The French were the dominant power on Earth and in space - not guaranteed to win many friends this side of the Atlantic - apart from one province of Canada.

2. The focus of the game changed. Because it was competing with and loosing out to Shadowrun & Cyberpunk the maketing department of GDW got them to change the focus towards a cyberpunk type game. The problem was that in this genre the game did not play as well. It also alienated fans of the game, such as myself.

I still have a fondness for the game and a couple of the suppliments could easliy be adapted for any version of Traveller.

Hope this helps.

Best damn "Hard" sci-fi game ever produced - up until Transhuman Space was published. Still wins in many areas. But, it had its flaws, some of which have been noted by others.

I still love it though.

As I first encountered it, Traveller2300, it was a renormed 3-D traveller setting not clearly distinct from the OTU, with a nice, streamlined CG, but unfortunately, no non-human CG.

2300AD was the rename, in part to clearly point out it wasn't the OTU.

I like the rules, in fact, more than MT. I've used it to run CT games; the players and I enjoyed that.

I wish there were traveller tech levels & weapons with it, but otherwise, it's a good, solid set of rules.

The setting isn't quite as grand, but is much the better for its methodology: The Game... the GDW staffers apparently developed the history of 2300 by a global wargame....
