Large scale regions of the Traveller Galaxy

When the Traveller Map is zoomed out as far as possible, numerous labels appear at different parts of the Galaxy: "Abyssals", "Denizens", "Core Sophonts", "Essaray", "Dushis Khurisi". What is the source of these names? Is there more detail about them?

I believe that appeared in the T5.0 BBB, but was not carried over into the T5.09 BBB. I don't know if it appeared elsewhere. According to T5.0 it was included as part of the 1065 Second Survey, but the appendix containing an explanation of the information was suppressed.

Cheers,

The information is on p.417 of the original T5.00 BBB, and a slightly different version was on the T5 Disc as a separate jpg-document "extra".

"Essaray" was also originally labelled as "SRAL" (in all-capitals) on the jpg, suggesting that "Essaray" is actually a pronunciation of the acronym "SRA". The secret appendix to the 1065 Second Survey suggests that something in relation to the Essaray is a "Level-29 threat" (which is astounding in light of the threat levels introduced in MWM's novel Agent of the Imperium.

In terms of official fiction development for the OTU, was this "outer galactic" stuff already in the works, or is it something that's still being formed as I type this post?

I understood about the Galaxiad, and was reminded of it in another section of the BBS, but these other "races" or entities ... I either missed them when I last zoomed out on that map, or something.

Enlightenment?

The names/labels superimposed on a galactic map were first introduced with the T5 material published in the T5-BBB and CD back in April/May 2013. Nothing about them other than the names/labels is known, AFAIK. The labels first appeared on TravellerMap in mid-July 2015 ( http://www.travellerrpg.com/CotI/Discuss/showthread.php?t=34680 ).

As to when these things first entered Marc's mind, that would have to be answered by someone in Marc's inner-circle. I do know that the concept of the "Barren Arm" has been around for at least a decade.

Interesting. Well, it sounds like it's a work in progress. Personally I'm a CT 3I guy. It's what I know best. Still, it'll be interesting to see what comes down the pipeline this year or the next.

Indeed, since it appears in the Zhodani Core Expedition data (as "Zone of Barren Worlds"), which was created by Clifford Linehan in conversation with Marc Miller no later than 2002.

It was actually a transcript of that very conversation that I referenced in order to answer the question. :)
