Las Cruces, NM - atmosphere code 7

We're in the middle of a sandstorm right now. You should see it: blue sky turned a light tan, can't see past a hundred yards, trees fluttering wildly in the wind, gritty taste and coughing if you go outside without a handkerchief. This extra fine sandy dust is filtering in under the door and through the window seals.

Fortunately, this isn't all that common, or it'd be a real health hazard.

You have a sandstorm, we have rain, 1.85 inches so far since 9AM, and more on the way. Spent the day working on keeping basement from flooding. Humidity is 100% and temperature is 41 degrees. This does not qualify as an atmospheric taint, but I cannot recommend it. Even the ducks and geese are grounded.

Pictures, dude! Sounds like the sort of thing we should be oohing and aahing about.

What you need for the doors and windows is an over-pressure system. Something to blow air into the house, so there's an outdraft under the door and through the cracks in the window seals.

Phoenix, AZ 5 July 2011. This was billed as "A 100-year event"... but there was another one in July 2012, one in September 2012, etc:

Yep, now *that's* an atmospheric taint! Both those pictures are reminiscent of ones I've seen from Iraq. I hope you stayed safe and relatively clean. Since this happens with some regularity, you need an "all clear" tradition - like ringing a bell or something... which signals that you're about to drink a whole bottle of rum. ;)

Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, we just had a foot of snow drop down on our heads.

On the plus side, this means the spring planting season begins with most of the state under only modest drought conditions -- assuming, of course, that the ground thaws out long enough for the farmers to get anything in before June.

Snowing here too, with temperature of 37 degree, and this is just north of Chicago, following our 4.13 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. I think that our drought is long since over, considering that we are up about 5 inches for the year so far. Ground not frozen, but fields have a lot of standing water.

Does excess atmospheric humidity count as an atmospheric taint?

Just finished digging out, heavy, heavy wet sloppy 'snow'. Some areas north of Minneapolis got 14+ inches. I got around 10.

Duluth, MN, had very little snow early this winter. They've now had a LOT of snow (I heard a report of 120 inches). Half of it since March 1st... :file_28:

Yes, timerover, I think it can. It can actually be hard to breathe for some people. My personal demon is the atmospheric taint where I live: pole pine pollen. It rained here one day last week; I went out the next morning and the car windshield was already coated so badly with yellow-green pollen that I had to hose it off to be able to see to drive. It doesn't do any good for my sinuses, either. (Even that isn't like Carlobrand's taint, though!)

High of 90 and low of 76, but tomorrow's high will be 77 with a low of 63.

Florida has lots of empty houses and very few jobs, but if you just want to a place to get out of the sand, $36,000 cash will buy a 2 br / 1.5 bath house (according to the sign I saw on the way to work). :)

Yep, that's about right. They closed the freeway west of here for a while, was a good deal worse out that way. Flat desert for miles out there, nothing much to slow the wind, lots of sand for it to pick up.

I had a terrible time with fungus spores during Houston's rainy season; was one of the reasons I moved out here. Dust is unpleasant, but at least I'm not allergic to it.

Then add Chicago to the Atmosphere 7 list, temporarily. Normal precipitation to date is 8 inches, we have had 16.41. The ground is saturated, and flooding is widespread. Chicago dumped a massive quantity of mixed storm water and sewage run-off into Lake Michigan. We already have set a record for the rainiest April for my area, and have 11 days in the month to go.

Technically, I think that's changing the hydrographic number, timerover. You got your raft ready?

I am on some of the highest ground in the area. What I am thinking about is getting a nice DUKW to handle the flooded roads. The emergency agencies in the area would love it too.

I am wondering though if a planet might not have temporary or intermittent taints from pollen from vegetation, intense storms, or periodic climate extremes like H. Beam Piper's planet, Fenris.

Wisconsin Dells probably has some used ones if you are serious, it's a great tour otherwise if you aren't.
