McAfee security updates are driving me up the wall

Does anyone else have McAfee's Security Anti-Virus software? If so, how do you keep it from scanning after it updates your software?

This goddamn thing is really driving me nuts, and pumping up my blood pressure. It installs, scans, updates, then scans some more. It's gotten to the point where I can't use my computer properly without waiting half an hour because my hard drive is always in use.

I'm about ready to fix my computer the old fashioned way by driving my foot through it.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend steel toed boots.

;)

Can't help with the problem though I seem to recall seeing someone else saying the same on another forum.

Do you have the scheduler set or do you have McAfee schedule for you? I have mine set for scanning 1am every day and I don't have that problem when it updates. I think if you take it off of automatic scan and schedule a specific time the problem might go away.

No, it doesn't need to scan every time. There are settings within the program that determine when it scans. What's probably happening (based on what happened to me) is that the software is set to scan on a particular schedule -- say, at 3 a.m. every morning. But if you don't leave your computer on 24 hours a day, then Mcafee will try to "catch up" and run that missing scan at the earliest opportunity, which is as soon as you turn on the computer. You need to navigate through Mcafee's utterly nonintuitive menus and find that scheduling screen to change the setting. I did it about a year ago, so I don't remember anymore which menu you need. I do remember that it was hard to find. An online search for specific terms might help.

Yes, Mcafee is aggravating. If I didn't get it free through Comcast, I wouldn't use it.

That's it! I can't take this crap anymore. McAfee is installing and upgrading even as I this message. I've had my computer on ALL DAY and only when I get home from work does McAfee decide to update and scan my computer? I can't take this BS program anymore.

McAfree Security = Trashware

You're only first finding this out? I long ago vowed that no software named "Symantec" (including "Norton") or "McAfee" would ever provide any sort of alleged "protection" for any system I owned.

Antivirus recommendation: AVG. I liked it enough to actually pay for it.

Stupid me reached for Symantec after I fired off this tirade. I've had Guard Dog, Spysweeper, Yahoo's proprietary software, most recently McAfee, something ATT/Pacbell put together, and one or two others (names escape me). My computer's been broken into, tracked and stuff, but nothing too serious.

I was just really sick and tired of McAfee updating at the absolute WORST times. I mean... how can anyone get anything done with that junkware on their system? I wake up, come downstairs, fire up the computer, use the bathroom, make some breakfast, and my computer is still booting? Huh? I just couldn't take it anymore. I got really PO'd at it. I've also been working some pretty odd hours, so maybe that's part of it too... still McAfee didn't help any.

I swear I'll never buy or install anything from this company ever again.

the sad thing is I remember when Nortons was THE program to use. It became programma non grata for me when norton sold out its customers and went for the big bucks. They started charging for the updates in addition to the AV software. I had pretty much stopped using it a while before that since I wasnt online very often, so I missed a big chunk of the downward spiral in functionality and userfriendlyness many of my friends told me (complained) about.

Personally I think that it would be a good thing if symantec went under in the most destructive manner to itself possible. Maybe with some entertaining convictions of the BOD. That would be a thing to toast!

McAfee defaults to scanning every Friday on my system. Sometimes I let it complete. Sometimes I cancel it if I'm rendering something I need quick.

Now I'm remembering why I kicked Symantec off my system. Christ almighty, it's just as bad as McAfee.
