mechs in traveller

Well, in Battletech, punching used the Mechwarrior's pilot skill. So I would use pilot skill here as well.

For Battledress...hmmm...I'll have to double check the rules. If there is a battledress pilot skill, I'd combine that with the pilot's brawling skill.

Remember: 3050 Tech is for Momma's Boys and NAIS grads.

If your in battledress (and have the Vehicle(Battledress) or Vehicle (Heavy Armor) feats), use the characters BAB.

Otherwise, characters are required to have the Vehicle feat and P/Loader or P/Teamster skill to even think about hitting someone. Again, use the characters BAB for this, but the lower of the Arm or Characther Dex bonus.

Appendages do normal damage (1d4 + strength). When dealing with metal arms, the damage is both Lifeblood and Stamina.

As a house rule, I convert large Strength bonus back into dice (say each +5 = 1d10) for a more random damage results.

D&D 3E has rules for converting melee weapon damage based on size. You can find the table on page 162 in the DMG.

Thus a punch from a Huge Mech would do 1d8, a Gargantuan Mech would do 2d6, and a Colossal Mech would do 2d8. The Vehicle scale rules would also seem to apply. The size increase rules would also cover oversized melee weapons.

Plus does some damage to the "fist" that punched.

So if you slam an AR3 fist against an AR3 wall, I would probably do half damage to the fist.

Punching is not combat effective. Mechs are not combat effective (Throws gauntlet on the floor). A Walking gun platform is bad enough, why make the thing anthropomorphic? (The Answer is "It looks Cool")

On a low G World, legs might be more useful than wheels/tracks although could argue the point.

Hear, hear.

"Oh look there using 30-foot tall mechs! Oh well better call up the Z-plasma battery. Have them aim for the heads"

Seriously they need to get a "what real armies are like" book (ala book 4 mercenary) out for T20 soon to stop such silliness. Mechs are fun in battletech but against pop-up plasma they are so much hot metal.

thanks for all the ideas... i like the pilot skill use and DMG damage modified by strength... as far as mechs are concerned, i was thinking mor like large battledress then huge lumbering mechs (i've been converting heavy gear frames since the volume of a vehicle equals it's mass)...

on annother note, how far does a vehicle move on a grid in T20, it says how large a hex was but not what the stats translate to (asside from actually wipping out the physics and graphing calc.) ;)
