For those interested, because I don't like the Traveller dice mechanics and you might not either...
So I’ve been working on a reboot of 2300 (from the old books) for use with Silhouette mechanics. The one thing I’ve always liked about Traveller is the chargen tables. So I am creating similar stuff for my reboot when it occurred to me that you could run any Mongoose Traveller chargen sequence almost right out of the box with Silhouette.
-Use Traveller skills and not Silhouette
-Swap some attributes around since Silhouette uses more and different ones (especially SOC).
-Come up with a 0-level approximate for skills.
Then roll as needed.
Since Silhouette uses an average attribute score of +0, with a maximum of +3/-3, you can simply use those bonuses to replace the rolls required in the Trav Chargen sequence. For example, Intelligence 8+ you use the Silhouette version of Intelligence and apply the bonus to your 2d6 roll. Same result and almost the same spread.
Silhouette skills start off easy to get at 1 and 2 but 3 or 4 are much higher and harder to get. Most folks have skills in the range of 1-2. Traveller characters are in much the same situation, so the end result is remarkably similar.
I think I’ll pick up 2300AD MGT and see how it works. Might change my approach quite a bit.
