Modern Traveller Resources - Awesomeness

Mithras

SOC-14 1K
Now that I've a couple of intro scenarios successfully under my belt, I've decided to try a short campaign (no overarching metaplot etc) with my two sons, as reported here (http://www.travellerrpg.com/CotI/Discuss/showthread.php?t=15114).

I've snagged a wonderful starmap from David Elrick which covers the 'Abyss' around the Lanth, Jewell, Regina borders that is perfect for my game on the Main.

I have a 'string' of a dozen worlds that could be used as stop-overs by the players, and I want an adventure seed ready for each one. They can go where they will ... real freedom. Or the illusion. I'm knocking up short descriptions of these worlds now, making each colourful, memorable and cool - each in its own right. Luckily that is my strong-point. :)

Well, I already know about the online interactive atlas, the online Library Data, and fantastic galleries of Traveller artwork that you bet I'll be using on my laptop at the gametable (why don't you access the ship's computer...?). But I just discovered Andrew Boulton's awesome CGI videos - http://www.traveller3d.com/gallery/index.htm - my sons, after seeing taster videos for EVE online, will love these, and really give them the feeling they are starting a 'huge' and popular game. My son watched the Game Geeks review of T20 over my shoulder and was quite excited when he recognised several references. Hopefully he won't see it as niche hobby or game, when my laptop just opens up with a fountain of high quality online resources, vector graphics, amazing full colour clickable starmaps ... fully searchable databases, the works.

If only we'd had this back in 1982!!!!!

I am so pleased to be able to share my fond memories of CT with my sons by actually gaming with them. And I am determined that one of them will GM for us, before the year is out - its only natural!

Anyway - thank you everyone who's put out resources for Traveller over the years, I gives me such a thrill to watch that scoutship negotiate the asteroid field, or see beautifully rendered Spinward Marches maps, or look at the Gazelle in space or taking off in a high rez picture.

Combined with some low key music (DOOM, the EVE soundtracks) and some great handouts, I want this to be a real hands-on, immersive 'we are in this world and we can go where we want campaign'.

I will continue to post!

I am starting a game with my two sons in June. I have decided to use the TNE 1248 setting and the Spinward States specifically for my setting. I will probably use Mongoose Traveller as the base game system since it will be the one supported going forward, although I have lots of CT stuff to house-rule whatever I don't like. They are D&D 3.5 players almost exclusively, so it will be a bit of a challenge.

I am also excited about what I can bring to them on my laptop. It's like discovering the game all over again and we haven't even played once yet. I am totally psyched about this (totally).

They both helped me with some of the MGT playtest files, so they are not complete noobs to the system. They are also trying to get a couple of friends to join. We are just waiting for school to get out (and to give me a chance to get the setting and system down before we start).

I, like you, am glad I can pass on my passion for this wonderful game and setting to my kids (god that makes me feel old to write that down). Multi-generations playing the same game is very cool.

How old are your boys - they sound like teenagers (I can't imagine I can be old enough to have teenage boys...).

If I were playing with adults, I'd delight in creating my own universe... but since I'm trying to impress my sons with the setting, I'm using canon setting.

I wish someone had created photos of military personnel in uniform, as GDW did with 2300 in the Aurora Sourcebook. That would be fantastic.

For ship interiors I've been/will trawl the net looking for movie starship interiors, I think you really need those locations to give a sense of place to your players - teens, pre-teens OR adults!

My sons are 21 and 17 (God that REALLY makes me feel old).

The oldest is working as a Paramedic, but the youngest is finishing his Junior year of high school. They have several years of D&D under their belts and play all the video and on-line RPG type games, so they understand the idea.

Also, they helped me with the playtest of the Mongoose Traveller rules as the Translight game that Avenger Enterprises in developing, so they are familiar with the game but know nothing of the OTU.
