Mongoose's Traveller Bible

SOC-14 10K
A simple question. Does such exist? (see below for more explanation)

A simple answer will do, though more wouldn't be unappreciated.

I'm just wondering if at some point during the license talks Mongoose (being whoever is the one/s dizzy for Traveller, if I recall the expression Matt used in a interview a while back) and Marc Miller (and/or aides) sat down and hashed out what was CORE to Traveller?

It seems to me such a bible wouldn't hurt. Though putting it together might have required an investment of some time by Marc, it seems it would have been well worth the effort.

I ask because I recall the original sales pitch running along the lines of Mongoose Traveller would be to T5 as CT LBB1-3 was to everything else in CT, or something like that. And that Mongoose Traveller would be fully/backwards compatible with T5 in the same way.

Naturally I saw that as a pretty lofty if nigh impossible goal to be reaching for given that T5 was still in development. Unless (I thought at the time) Marc had a solid outline of the CORE and was further along with T5 than it seemed.

And somewhere along the way that idea seems to have changed significantly. Not saying for better or worse. Though I wonder at the "it was always that way" statements of late. Perhaps it was my misreading, but I think several other people misread it the same way.

Mongoose has been seeming to follow the outline of CT to a large degree. That and the original sales pitch kind of had me thinking maybe there was a CORE bible but recent post make it seem not.

Anyway, if anyone from Mongoose (or in the know) would like to answer I'm sure there are a few here who would be as interested as myself. You don't have to go into details of course but even a yes or no would be of interest. Or ignore it, this is probably just insomniac auto-typing ;)

When we started Traveller, we had a list of what absolutely must stay, and another of things we wanted to change. Jump Drives, for example, had to stay. On the other hand we had plenty of work to do in skills.

The original aim was to bring Traveller and T5 close together, so you could dip in and out of the two, treating one as basic and one as advanced. As things turned out, the development of T5 was slower than that of Traveller, and so that had to be abandoned.

For the rest, certain things have been mapped out (what aspects of the OTU will be next, what part of space will next be detailed), others have not. For example, aside from what is in the core rules, nothing has yet been agreed for robots and how they will be constructed (other than an acknowledgement that it should be way easier than Book 8!).

Hope that helps!

Very helpful indeed. Thanks Matt. And let me add I also appreciate your constitution in hanging in and hanging out here now and then, and keeping a sense of humour through it all. Like Don said we do mean well, even if we don't always come off as such.

p.s. On the less complicated Robots. Good, very good :)

"Easier than Book 8" would be good news indeed, but the rest of the senten-
ce reads as if a robot supplement would still be a thing of the distant future
- and that would be not so good news ...

Not distant-distant. Just. . . not yet :) We have a few things to cover first before we get on to Robots (come on, you waited long enough for them in CT :)).

In the meantime, Jon Brazer Enterprises will be bringing you Mech Tech 'n' bot. Each art heavy supplement brings you new robots designed to be inline with the robots in the core book (with a nice little profit for the high end models, of course). I am sure everyone is going to love Janel.

(Oops!!! Did I type Janel outloud?!? Shhhh! I'm not suppose to talk about her for two weeks yet!)

Don has also made noises about establishing a "Traveller bible". His vision is comprehensive, and therefore unlikely, but attractive.

...not completely, though.

We've already mapped damage from T5 to MGT. Therefore, Traveller 5 can, right now, serve as an excellent design system for personal weapons and armor for Mongoose Traveller, and adds a number of options which MGT doesn't have.

I'm sure skill levels map, but no-one has worked that out.

Traveller 5 starship sensors and weapons can probably be ported to Mongoose Traveller (I'm working on the conversion now), and would provide a rich resource for Mongoose Travellers.

Are all the T5 Design sequences at a "stable and usable" stage right now or just the personal armor and weapons?

What do you mean...Robots was covered in the first few issues of JTAS...oh, I guess you mean 101 Robots and Book 8...yeah, we had to wait a long time for that. As much as Robots do define SF, I would like to see the Third Imperium as the humancentric fleshed out much more. For I think the tradition of having a humancentric SF has been lost to a certain extent by the chrome of Star Wars and its many copycats. And, as much as I do love Star Wars (and parts of it do enter into my Traveller game...)it is not...and I repeat...not Traveller (nor is Firefly but let us save these discussion for another thread).

Any attempt at a bible should be frowned upon. As these should only exist as guidelines. Otherwise, things to prop up a falling mountaineer. We all have seen how bibles of all faiths become justifications for dogmatism and rigidity. Whereas, the aim of Traveller is to free thought.

The draft is still there... someday. It would be like doing the timeline all over again, but it is doable.

Not really. JTAS issues 2 and 3, and Adventure 2 ;)

JTAS 2 didn't come out until late 1979 -- more than 2 years after CT was published. Azhanti High Lightning has warbots IIRC in 1980. In 1979, White Dwarf included rules for robots as well.

HOWEVER...GDW didn't produce any significant CT supplements until 1979 (Adventure 1; Supplement 2; etc.)* However, RPG companies didn't really grok the fact that most players and referees wanted pregenerated adventures, worlds and expansion materials until the late 1970s, so I'm not sure that this is a reasonable comparison.

*I really don't count Mayday (1978) or the virtually useless Supplement 1 (1978) as CT supplements.

Emm - I was going to post something but suddenly can't remember what and now feel nothing but affection for everyone on these boards...

At least as far as the Traveller Thought Police agree with you, anyway...

The TTP do not exist. I do not serve the TTP. Nobody serves the TTP, because they don't exist. Peace and warm feelings from the Consulate. Traveller loves you, and has a wonderful plan for your life... trust the Consulate, who are not the TTP.
