===Back Story===

Although Jules was born on a wealthy world, his family was somewhat poor and could not send him to the high-quality schools his intelligence and creativity deserved. He did well in his studies, however, and showed a particular interest in Xenoarcheology; especially anything having to do with the Ancients.

He entered the world of academia, but finding the classroom a bit boring due to his adventurous spirit, he became a field researcher for the famous Dr. Ignacious Reese. While working with Dr. Reese, he met and fell in love with his co-researcher, Amanda Wilds.

After 4 years of working with Dr. Reese; he and Amanda were invited to be part of a corporate sponsored expedition which he suspected would end up being nothing more than a treasure hunt to profit the corporation. He took the job, despite his misgivings mostly due to encouragement from Amanda. He was sorely disappointed when his suspicions turned out to be true. The corporation ended up auctioning off a large part of a cache of Ancient artifacts his team had discovered, and selling much of the advanced tech found to military researchers.

Embittered by the entire experience, he quit his position. Amanda, however, stayed with the company. Feeling betrayed and alone, he began to drift around the galaxy. Sometimes taking menial work aboard tramp freighters just to get from one planet to the next. He would also occasionally work for small dig teams.

When he was 30, he found himself short on money and resources. His adventurous spirit and craving for stability lead him to an Imperial Scouts recruitment station. Given his background and his obvious physical health, the Scouts offered him a position aboard advanced exploration vessel, "Ukendt," and an attractive benefits package.

He thrived in the Scouts, and found the work to be exciting, interesting, and challenging. Just prior to his reenlisting, he received news that Dr. Reese had died under mysterious circumstances.

His second term in the Scouts was even more exciting and adventure filled than his first. While on a mission on a particularly dangerous world, the Ukendt's companion ship crashed due to exceedingly harsh weather conditions. He lead the team which rescued them and received the undying gratitude of the destroyed ship's captain, Angus Triev.

By the end of the term, he began to consider leaving the service. Hearing word of this, and fearing loosing an exemplary scout, Angus approached him with an offer to join the Detached service. He would receive a large cash grant, and his own ship. The ship would still be owned by the Scouts, but he would have autonomy in crewing the vessel and her missions with the caveat that the Scouts could call him back to duty with his vessel and crew if a mission required their particular skills. He jumped at the opportunity.

He took his new ship to the edge of known space and put out a wire on the X-boat network: "Seeking crew for Detached service specializing in xenoarcheology. Former Scouts and merchants preferred. A taste for adventure a must."

Cool

...I just wish I could play him!

I think that's a sentiment much echoed ;)

I have a couple questions, just curiosity...

Is MgT your first exposure to Basic or Advanced Traveller "Prior History" character generation method?

Or is it that MgT has a special slant on it that appeals to you as significantly different from prior versions?

Yeah. All of my Traveller experience has been either CT or GURPS. I always preferred CT, I think mainly because of sentimentality. Traveller, more than any other game, I think; has an emotional and nostalgic connection for me. It was the game that started several friendships. It was the game that I spent hours each day on when I was 14 and had moved to a dinky little town in Tennessee and had no friends. Although I had played D&D for a few years before trying Traveller, it was the game that really got me *into* gaming.

I avoided a lot of the later editions for various reasons. My friends didn't play them, they seemed too stuck on background, or they just didn't appeal to me.

I was really skeptical about MgT, but after I read their SDK, I literally rushed right out to the FLGS (EndGame in Oakland) to pick up the Pocket Guide edition.

So I don't really know how char gen compares to other editions besides CT. I can say that GURPS was a favorite system of mine in college and the main reason was that char gen was completely non-random.

What I really like about the MgT char gen is that it's a bit of both. You can start out with a general idea of what you want, and through assignment of traits and career choices, you can stay on target. But what you end up with, with the events and mishaps and such, is a lot of inspiration to add detail to a character.

If you have *no idea* what kind of a background you want for your character, the creation process can help a great deal.

So… for me, it maintains a lot of the feel of CT while being much more detailed (without over complicating things).
