My Ship designs

Question: Ships like the Vahalla and Broadsword with their ovoid design. Are you bored with them?

Statement: I'm willing to do ship cards for these vessels but it may take a week or two. Just tell me which ones you want.

I've got two ships on the drawning board right now that use basically the Oviod body style of the Vahalla, I think I'm in a rut. They will be basically the same design with minor differences.

Try a cylinder (cigar) or equilateral triangular design.

I can slap a half dozen cylinder designs up on the site today and still have a dozen left over.

About three trianglar with four in the finishing stages.

I am well aware that most people desire large ships. I could within a matter of days build a smaller verison of a battlestar. But what attract most people to a design is a style or visual impression which they find pleasing to the eye. The ovoid bow section please my sense of desgin but I don't know how fast you guys will tire of that design...

I'm fine with functional designs.

Another Question: Do you still want me to the information I put with each ship or just the design itself? I use a different system than Traveller so if you just want the tonnage, cargo capacity, passanger and weapon load out or do you still want me to put all the data with them. Or none at all...

PS: Today is my Anniversary, 7 years attached to the same ball and chain for the second time, so I can't respond lin the way I want to your questions...

Put it all in, from my view. I like the format of the Jaeger.

As to ovoid, I am alright with them, but I am partial to something that can settle on its belly, should things awry. Ovoids do make me think of Weebles with high centers of gravity...

Andrew Boulton just posted so I'm not going to post the ship that started this thread just yet. I'm going to finish the design which caused me to make this variant before posting both of them.

Im very partial to your posts in the art gallery, particularly the variations "cards" like the gazelle one.

Im rather surprised someone hasn't borrowed that idea for their ship books etc because I can see series variants as being a common thing in the traveller universe (especially with "reworks" just for tech level differences) just like it has been for several real world warplanes & tanks

keep posting !

Peter:

I have two variants of the Gazelle that Are just sitting on my harddrive collecting electrons. They need a little modernization (New stamps) but they were intended to show that the Gazelle had been sellect from a competion when the imperium decided on it as their main close escort.

I've got about ten years of drawing that I'm going through and working on. The Surveyor Class was finished two year ago but I never finalized (Created a Data and cleaning up the drawing). I did a complete study of that type of ship and have several different decks. My Stretta Designed Merchant ships, I have one more that I haven't posted and one based on Vigilante, which started me making the Stretta in the first place.

Like I said, I could post a ship a day for a month and still have several left over...

I'll be posting both designs tommorrow morning. But in the meantime, here is something to chew on...

Modifications:
Several navies have opted to make the follow modifications:
 Replace the Laser Cannons for PPC.
 Replace the Bearcat CSM with 34 decoys.
 Replace reconnaissance drones with18 Decoys.
 Wings are compartmentalized and more armor is added to the structure.
 Launch is replaced with a standard production model 10 ton Fighter.

Overview:
The Sabre was designed to carry the battle from space to the planet surface. The lack of adequate AA suppression made it almost impossible for this ship to carry out this mission. When the ship moved from the private sector to the public domain of standard production model the vessel began to fill the role of corvette in most independent navies. Some were styled after frigates by removing the launch and replacing it with a standard production model fighter. Down through the years the term frigate stuck and ever since the universe has known them as Frigates.
The battle history of this class has grown steady since reaching the public domain. Most independent navies see this vessel as a fast attack craft. The four laser cannons and two torpedo launchers in the bow make quite an impression on their enemies as they charge into battle before the capital ships. The power of the ship’s weapons is well known to those who have attempted to defend themselves from these predators. Lone ships have recorded impressive victories against destroyers, cruiser and carriers. Without a doubt the Sabre is a fine warship but it does have its drawbacks.
As stated earlier, the lack of AA suppression capabilities makes it vulnerable to fighter attack. The large wings act as fuel tanks are exposed to enemy gunners during turns. The lack of decoys against missile attacks is another concern. It is no wonder that this proud vessel fell out of favor with the major powers soon after it they were field-tested. Stylist as it is, the ship is really nothing more than an over rated escort.
However some navies see hope for the Sabre. Some have even begun to retrofit the gallant warrior with better armor and are seeking answers to the problems facing the Sabre. As each variant runs it course lessons are learned and what doesn’t work is tossed by the wayside. There is still hope for this valiant crusader. Nor should one believe that they are ready for retirement. There are battle-tested crews and navy technicians who will tell you that it isn’t over yet. Her class still has a lot of fight left in her.

Both designs are up.

The Mk 2 is more of a combat ship, while the Mk 3 is a Patrol Ship and it has everything to do with ordinance. The MK 3 also is more agile because of the deflector vanes in the engine exhaust, however you don't want to over do it in the atmosphere.

I could tweak the design one more time and add a troop bay, making midship section ship longer, which would make into a T-Class Patrol ship.

Just Asking - Sorry to be a bother

Rigel - Just asking - can you really do Ships Designs fairly easily.

I am in a hole in my Universe - coz we have Ships Specified, Weapons Loadouts Specified ( but not by me ), but no Pics of them at all.

A two-view of these would help - but I do not know if you are willing at all to consider helping with a non-traveller Universe.

We have the following Ships -
Customs Corvettes
DD Destroyers
FF Frigates ( bit bigger )
CS Scout Cruisers
CL Light Cruisers
CC G.P. Cruisers - not building any more of these
CA Armoured Cruisers
CH Heavy Cruisers
BC4 Battlecruisers
BC3 Battlecruisers
BC2 Battlecruisers
BC1 Battlecruisers
BB4 Battleships
BB3 Battleships
BB2 Battleships
BB1 Battleships
SBB Super Battleships 22 Km long.
XSBB Extra Super Battleships 45 Km long.

SCV Super Carriers - 200 Fighters.
CV Carriers - 100 Fighters.
CVL Light Carriers - 30 Fighters.

We have Weapons Specs and some other specs, for all of these.
XSBBs are 45 Km x 15 Km wide, "dagger shaped" a bit like "Star Destroyers" - with two hangars for 100 Fighters.

Weapons are Railguns of various sizes, Plasma Guns of various sizes, Laser Weapons of various sizes, and Point Defence Laser Clusters.
We also have Very Fast FTL Drives.
We have a number of unarmed Ship types, also -
CMT Cruiser, Military Transports for Fleet support.
CFR Cruiser, Fleet Repair for Fleet support.

Just asking - coz I am stuck.
We have a Defence Director - but he can't do Ship Designs in pics.
I am the G.M.
13 Players - 16 Colonised Systems - and Hostile Alien Empire against us.

Oh Yes - all Ships Belly Land. But bigger than Cruisers only at Docks on Asteroids or small moons - or at orbital docks.

Big Ships up to 20Km or even 45 Km which are Colony Ships CAN land on Planets - but they are not Warships.

If you are asking about drawing just ships to cover the spectrum you present in your post, that is a tall order. Right now, as far as deck plans go, I'm running about the size of a corvette as defined by Jane's warships. There is also the issue of style (what sort of ships pleases your players), in my case ship from shows like, Bab-5. Stargate, space 1999, and UFO to name a few. Ships that could be built at or near our tech level if only we had FTL and an enclosed enviroment life support system.

Then comes the artistic and design interperation issue which would have to be ironed out as well.

Eample of this is Rail Gun and Plasma Gun. Everyone is pretty clear on rail guns because all they are, are Linear Acelerator Guns (LAG), weapons that use a linear accelerator to fire a projectile. Plasma Guns the description that sticks in my head is from Tekwars. Gas are collect from the atmosphere (or taken from a compressed cylinder of gas), compressed and then expelled using a particle acelerator. While the scientific explaination for plasma is basically any charged particles which would make it a Particle beam weapon.

Just give me something to work on and I'll see what I can do, but I'm not making any promises...

Thank You - Rigel

I am very grateful that you would even consider doing it.
I would of course ensure that you get full credits for your work - that is, source and name, to preserve your Copyright rights.
We could even include a Link to you as the "....... Design Bureau".

However - there is no rush at all - we have been running this Game since January this Year - and I have been G.M. since the end of March.

I was thinking that I would have to do Outline Drawings in Autocad 2006 ( Light - 2D ) That would be just 2D side and plan views. Outside views that is.
The real problem is that no-one has ever really attempted to describe how these ships look - nor how they work, except in general terms.

We do not need internal views - as we never fight at the personnel level.
We only have Fleet Commanders - and ATM our only enemy is the evil, nasty Aliens.

We are probably looking at functional designs really - boring streamlined cylindrical like shapes, except those XSBB "dagger" Ships - perhaps with "flat bottoms". But several have belly Turrets. Maybe landing gear.
All have to be able to land on their bellies, with landing gear - even the XSBB Ships are being built in a Moon Base Shipyard.

Powerplants are Thermal Nuclear / Fast Breeder Nuclear up to now - but our Science guy now says we have cheap, safe Fusion - but only in Units from 9 GigaWatts upwards.

In-System Propulsion would be Reaction Propulsion, possibly some form of accelerated gas stream, related to plasma weapons.

FTL Drives are Very Fast - but I have no idea how they work ( someone mentioned refined drive cores ).
Probably something internal, but external loading ports and eject ports for cores. The Ships can carry several normal Drive Cores. Oh yes - the 100 times faster "one trip" Z-Drive - this has to eject used cores from the FTL Drive. This Tech was decided before I joined the Game - but it was "found" Technology from abandoned ejected cores we found.
Probably needs external ports for loading and ejecting FTL cores, and for loading and ejecting Z-Drive cores.

We have Spinally mounted Railguns on some Ships - and some Turret Mounted Railguns on biggest Ships or as secondary armament. Plasma Weapons are all Turret Mounted I think. They use compressed gas magazines - gases being derived from mining on Moons and Asteroids.
We have Lasers from Heavy to Light, in Turrets - and multiple Point Defence Laser groups in Turrets.

We are gonna be getting some more "exotic" stuff in the next 8 weeks -
First -- Energy Shields for the first time
Then -- Particle Accelerators shooting powerful pulsed Neutron Beams, a bit faster than Light Speed - don't ask me how.
Finally --
Energy Beams ( Force Beams ) - generated frequency beams in high frequencies and high energies.
Tractor Beams, and Pressor Beams.

I don't know the tonnage of Ships - it will be more governed by sizes.
Customs Corvettes - 100 m long.
Destroyers - 500 Km long.
Frigates - 800 m long.
Cruisers - 2 Km long.
Battlecruisers - 8 Km long.
Battleships - 8 Km long.
Super Battleships - 22 Km long.
Light Carriers - 2 Km long.
Carriers - 8 Km long.
Super Carriers - 20 Km long
XSBB Ships - 45 Km long

I actually have Specs. for all of the standard Weapons in current use.
And Weapons Loadouts for all the Ship Types.
SBB and Super Carrier Ships have two Powerplants - and the XSBB Ships have four Powerplants.
As the XSBB are only started building - they will probably have Fusion Powerplants now.
Unarmed Ships of 100 m length can easily cary 2,000 ton payloads.

Sorry if this is a bit overwhelming.
Yes - we have FTL, and enclosed Life Support for all these Ships.

The Fighters we actually have a Pic of - but it must have been lifted from an Internet Source.

http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forums/group.php?do=picture&groupid=90&pictureid=4423

Sorry - I do not have the original Source for this - but it could be improved, in my opinion, and also to avoid Copyright.
Yeh - this all happens in Armchair General Site.

Onwards and Upwards
