New Serenity Trailer

Shiny!

Though I read something deeply upsetting about the film in SFX yesterday. Not going to repeat it here, it's a bummer of a spoiler.

Crow

Something about a character death by any chance?

Those rumours have been circulating for a while now... :(

And thanks for the link Mal

WOW

SPOILER
SPOILER
SPOILER

Well, as you mentioned it:

The way they put it (and they've seen the film), is that not all the crew make it to the end of the film. They obviously don't say who. I suppose that doesn't necessarily mean that they die... :(

Also, in the trailer, where's Book?

Crow

Book may not be in the trailer, but he is in the movie. And yes, I have seen it. Ron Glass, the actor who plays Book, also was at the screening I attend, along with Nathan Fillion (Mal).

As for the rumor, I will neither confirm nor deny it. You'll just have to wait to see for yourself.

It is a strength, I think of Joss Whedon's writing and and a tribute to the the actors' acting that there isn't a single character aboard Serenity that I will be happy to see pass on. I'll be absolutely gutted whoever it is (and SFX implied vaguely that it could be more than one) and I'm dreading it almost as much as I am looking forward to it.
In stark contrast, I watched Padme die in Episode III and all I could think was, 'get on with it.' =(

I could handle it, just about, I think if they resolve River's story in this movie and lose River and/or Simon. I'd like to see them explore Book in the next movie, though.

Crow

It's also a strength that Whedon can then chew up at least one liked character if not outright off them a season and keep viewers coming back for more. And if Whedon sticks to earlier patterns, no character is safe. ^_^

Firefly was *just* entering the first plot "snap"* on the way to a season finale. More's the pity but I'm hoping the movie will at least capture some of Whedon's plot finesse.

- yeah I’m a ‘shipper

* I don't know of a good term for what Whedon does in the course of a season. It's more than plot twists. If the plot starts on a line at the beginning of the season, this would be taking the line and snapping it and then coming back now and then to snap or shatter it again and again. You can never get back to where the plot or characters were after each time. Season endings are a plot maelstrom.

I just saw my first episode of Firefly last week - SciFi is running it on Friday evenings, evidently as a run-up to the movie release. I think I missed a previous episode that played immediately before the one I watched, or it was a two-hour episode  - it might have been the pilot, as the "shy" girl who appears to be in the movie is a new addition to the ship.

Anyway, I have to say I liked it, though it was a bit "old-school" Traveller (see the thread on Ethical Patrons ;) ). I especially like the no-nonsense approach of the captain when faced with a hostage situation in the midst of needing to get airborne - 1 shot to the forehead. Definitely my kind of captain.

And, it only took one line for the trailer to hook me (otherwise it was entirely too chaotic to try and get any sense of the story):
"This could get interesting"
"Define interesting"
"Oh God, oh God, we're all going to die"
"OK"

Wait until this week's episode, "The Train Job." Classic old-school Traveller adventure. And the captain has another classic moment you will love.

And yes, last week's episode was the second part of the two-hour pilot. They showed the first part two Friday's ago, then showed it again in the hour before the second part played last Friday.

Well, that's why I felt cheated, then. I didn't see the ads about them running Firefly until last week, and they didn't mention running one an hour early. :( I'm going to try not to miss the rest, though.

Go to Suncoast Video in the Mall (or Amazon, or wherever) and get the Boxed set. It is worth every bit of the $45 bucks I paid for it. I watched Buffy for years, and it had the most imaginative plot, dialog, and characters of any show on TV in the past few DECADES. (yeah, it was horror, fantasy, but just LISTEN to the show...and Joss isn't afraid to kill off major characters to have a decent plot...) Joss's writing skills ROCK.
Serenity will be good, and is making this month suck alot. (cause I have to wait...)

Yeah, I have considered getting the DVDs (MADDog, you overpaid - $35 at Amazon). (BTW, you weren't selling some Traveller stuff on eBay recently, were you?)

And, Paraquat, you were right about Mal's classic moment! (Being a former pilot of an aircraft with REALLY large intakes, I could relate.)

Looks like Lucas is catching the Firefly bug.

As I just read that his new Star Wars live action television show will be entirely filmed using a local electronics story handicam. Or it could be that he has seen the quality of the fanfilms out there and realize that millions of stories can be told, if you all amateurs access to your IP and even the simplest equipment can tell remarkable stories.

I didn't quite understand what he meant. He seemed to be talking about the animated 3D series rather than the live action series, so I don't understand where a digital camera system comes into it.

Crow

My source is from the Science Fiction channel, it could be that they have got it mixed up. But I have been hearing for some time now that it would involve live actors.

The digital camera would refer to the amateur method used by Joss W. in all the Firefly sequences which were shot using a hand cam rather than a fixed camera setup, like in Star Trek. When it came to shooting things with the Alliance, he did revert back to the traditional stationary cam. This is what accounts for the different vibe in each sequence.

I was so busy working out of town (still am! :( ) that Firefly was never available, and frankly did not strike my interest for some reason.

Just saw both trailers a few moments ago.

I lured my lady wife into playing Traveller almost a year ago. When I bought the boxed set after hearing about Firefly on CotI, 20 minutes into the pilot she turned to me and, without any prompting, said 'This is Traveller'.

Case proven!
